Moose Insurance
Folks, I know we've talked about this subject many times, but, with the
market constantly changing, I thought it wise to please ask those who
have a Moose for input.
After getting quotes for full (libability, not-in-motion, in-motion) as
ranging from $4,500 to $5,500, I flew for the first year without
insurance (and with no mishaps I'm glad to say). I have 720 hrs total
time, 520 tailwheel, 110 Moose (make & model in other words).
I called Falcon insurance in Texas. They went to 5 different
underwriters, including Global and U.S. Specialty. No one else that
they deal with would touch a Moose. Global wouldn't write the Moose at
all if it has the M-14 engine. U.S. Specialty is quoting me $3,340 for
full coverage for $160K value, $1M/$100K (on wheels, no floats). So,
basically 2% of value for full coverage. That's not bad (what am I
saying?), but, the issue that could have me again saying "No" is...
U.S. Specialty does not provide coverage in Northern Canada nor
Alaska...unless I give them an itinerary before any trip...and...at an
additional premium (a rider). I'm planning a 6-week, once in a
lifetime, trip to Alaska from Colorado this summer. Frankly, I did not
acquire a Moose so I could land at Merrill Field, Homer and other 3,000'
x 75' paved runways. I can do that here in Colorado. I have the Moose
so I can fly into dirt strips in Utah, remote strips in Montana, and
whereever the locals recommend when I get to Alaska (within reason of
course). I can see this now, I can see the U.S. Specialty folks telling
me either "No" or charging a huge rider if I tell them I want to land at
Skwentna, Anaktuvuk Pass, or, say, Alsek River (near Yakutat).
Surely other Moose owners out there have insurance without such
restrictions (AK, North BC). Can anyone PLEASE give me contact
information for the insurance company / agent they are using?

That's the cheapest I can buy HULL coverage..NOT in motion for a
float/amphib airplane in Canada, less 15% if you nudge the value over 100k.
So actually 1.7% of hull if over $100,000cdn. In-flight on amphibs 5 to 6%
if you can find it and on wheels 3 to 4% or so +
As for the Northern Canada Alaska rule...anyone with Avemco read your policy
fine print as well. That's been there for ever..for flying above some
parallel. Guess it would depend what that "rider" is going to cost for 6
weeks.

I have liability only and there is still a restriction for flying North.
Last year we took a three week trip to Alaska and there was an extra $250
premium. They also asked for an itinerary but it was very general, up the
coast and back down the coast with the known fuel stops, they also wanted
information on my experience in the backcountry.

Moose Insurance
The cheapest I could get in flight hull for my Rebel amphib was 8% from
Falcon. I have over 80 hours in the Rebel amphib now. It was cheaper last year
when I had the 10 hours required time only.
I chose to go with liability only. I could total my plane every 12 years and
break even..if I survived. I'm a gambler I guess.

Gee, 2% sounds like a VERY good deal - certainly less than we can
get here (about 4% for full in-flight coverage). We have no choice here -
it is illegal to fly without liability insurance in Canada, so you'll need
that coverage just to get to AK, in any case !!
I'd draft a rough itinerary and send it to them before paying them for
ANY coverage - they might give a lower quote to get the business - and it
might really be a good deal. If you can get full coverage for 6 weeks
in the bush for ~ $500 or so, that would be a good gamble !! Having
adequate coverage can sure relieve a lot of stress when flying in
difficult surroundings - at least you're free to make the safest choices.
You can choose to belly into the trees and live to fly another day,
instead of trying to sneak through those low clouds - and at least you'll
have the cash to replace the airplane ! :-)

and take more chances trying to save your plane knowing it's not covered. But
just a few thoughts about your family, wife and kids will set your priorities
straight. After all, it's just metal and paint!

don't want to fax over an itinerary every time I go fishing. Chris Gill
(SR2500) and Ron Kakeldy (Moose) have flown up here a while, maybe they know
of a friendly insurance company.

FYI.... Talked with my underwriter this morning, Larry at London Aviation
Underwriters (Seattle, (206) 285-5401), and they do insure Mooseese north of
the border and with round motors. Price varies with experience and time in
type, may not like the math but it's possible....

Moose Insurance
My friend's 172 is with Forrest Agency and he called and asked about the
Super Rebel - Gail Macko(800 536 2011) said she has some Rebels but no Super
Rebel/Moose - maybe they can give it a go -

they said when the time came, they would. That was North American
Specialty. Sure wish I had them put that in writing. As I live in AK, I
don't want to fax over an itinerary every time I go fishing. Chris Gill
(SR2500) and Ron Kakeldy (Moose) have flown up here a while, maybe they know
of a friendly insurance company.

Yes, It can be stressful when your find yourself in a difficult situation
and take more chances trying to save your plane knowing it's not
covered. But
just a few thoughts about your family, wife and kids will set your
priorities
straight. After all, it's just metal and paint!
