Hello Alan

I have talk to mam and the stringer for the Rebel are the same thant for the
Elite. Mam price are $23.40 cdn ea. (should be 12' long). I have talk to
Sameday courrier and they can pick-up at Petawawa and bring the package here
for a very good price. I have figure a ABS pipe 2" or 3" diameter by 12'
long. So if you want, you buy the pipe plus to cap that you glue on, I
will pay you the stringer + plus the packaging materiel. Iwill assume the
freight... Please let me know

I just did a count on the stringers and come up one short. I can't
figure if I cut one up for the fin when I could of used some short
pieces left from the stab. Is this a common occurence with the group?
How does one ever get one of those shipped in across the country?

ship in a 12' length of 1 1/2" ABS or similar. There was a thread on this
about 3 weeks ago about Jean needing a couple stringers.

Welding would destroy most of the strength of the extrusion. Remember
these extrusions are much stronger than heat treated aluminum and
welding would even destroy the heat treatment of 6061T6. MAM might
approve rivetted joints on one stringer if done along the lines of what
is shown in AC43.13 though. Perhaps for one of the bottom stringers that
is in tension?

only courrier who will take a 12' long tubing. Cost me $40.00 cdn from
Petawawa Ont. to Quebec City. If you are closer of MAM they sale it for
$23.40 cdn ea. If you are in the states, Montana floats have the same
products....

I am a industrial gases/welding products distributor. On a regular base, I
give formation in tig welding (2 weeks ago , a conference to the local RAA
chapter). I love welding! .... and I will never think about welding
stringer.... If you have a perfect weld in a perfect environnement, without
a controled heat treatment after, and without some calculated stuctural
strengthening, at maximum you will have 40% of the original strenght plus
a britle zone! If you make it anyway, please just put one seat in your
airplane (it is a joke!)

Where are you located? If you're in Canada, I may be able to help, as I
have a few extra stringers. I recently shipped two to Jean on Quebec. He
paid me the MAM price, plus freight, which he paid COD. No tax. I shipped
them in a 12' piece of ABS pipe, which was about another $8 as I remember.

one here. I talked to Robin at MAM and he thought a splice would work but
was going to consult Daryl next week and let me know. If that doesn't pan
out maybe I will try Montana float.

It won't be THAT painful !! In any case, don't just order ONE -
make it 2 or 3, just in case !!!! If you don't need them for the wings,
you can cut them up & use for stiffeners in many other areas ....

I woud not recommend TWO splices in a stringer - what's your
life worth ??!!

I'll second that, go for the peace of mind & have a couple or 3 sent out and use
the left overs here and there. We are planning to use them to cut down on the oil
canning in the talicone, a trick I learned from Rick H. down under. Glue (2 side
tape Rick?) crosses in each bay & apparently it makes a big difference.

Mike,
We have remade many parts for our Elite, sometimes for the slightest
reasons. One guide that I use personally is how am I going to feel when
I am in the air and the turbulence kicks up or when the "hard landing"
gremlins come out to play or there is an unseen hole in that back
country strip. We all have different levels of ability but to accept
less than the best we are cabable of doing is a slippery slope. You
will have this decision many times in the course of building and I would
not presume to tell you or anyone else what to do but less than my
personal best would cost me more mentally than it is worth. Buy the
full length stringers.

Please excuse if I sound preachy - it's not meant that way. Maybe just
brain damage after 7 1/2 building years. As always, your plane / your
call.

Personally two splices in the same stringer wouldn't bother me. I would
try to keep any splices away from the critical point which would be near
the strut attachment. Again only if MAM agrees though. On Bob's
recommendation I also found an extra stringer handy for other areas ;)

Ok........so I ordered a stringer from Montana float. He only had the
heavier ones for a moose but MAM said no problem using one. Freight from MAM
was $250. Freight from MT $100. I'll just have to suck it up, hopefully it
will be my last screw up.............right

make it 2 or 3, just in case !!!! If you don't need them for the wings,
you can cut them up & use for stiffeners in many other areas ....

I woud not recommend TWO splices in a stringer - what's your
life worth ??!!

give formation in tig welding (2 weeks ago , a conference to the local

chapter). I love welding! .... and I will never think about welding
stringer.... If you have a perfect weld in a perfect environnement,

a controled heat treatment after, and without some calculated

stuctural

strengthening, at maximum you will have 40% of the original strenght

plus

a britle zone! If you make it anyway, please just put one seat in

your

airplane (it is a joke!)
