formulae in the CARS, in comes out to almost 2200 lbs, as I recollect.
That would be beautiful!
Also, something in writing confiming design agreement with the reduced
span spades on the elevator would be good to have on hand for my final
inspection. I did put in some doublers under the skins and on the tip
ribs to stiffen up the narrower spades, as this seemed prudent. There
are a couple of pictures on the wildcat BBS (www.dcsol.com).

It wasn't so much the gross weight thing that I was interested in - unless
he'd been prepared to go for something more than the 5%. It is the part on
the stab span reduction. Nobody seems to have noticed that.

Noticed it right off Al...just not as many Elite builders around here as
everything else. Everyone seemed to be doing the mod anyhow and I guess
everyone gets pretty lax since you really don't need MAM's blessing to do
these mods in Canada or the USA (disclaimer-of course I don't recommend mods
without their blessing... if you don't know what you're doing).
England and Oz may be a much different story. Nigel's in England and he
can't even install my firewall reinforcing plates unless he buys them
directly from me (ie he can't make them himself) and must buy all the other
parts from MAM to do any other mods to the airframe. Even with this he had
to get the authorities blessing in writing before doing any mods from the
way the kit comes..so for him this letter is worth it's weight in gold.

Regarding the stab spade mod ... I planed on doing anyway. But it is nice
to know MAM is on board ... but it wasn't the determining factor in my doing
it ... it was definitely on the list.
As an asside ... yesterday I got a chance to get some stick time in Al
Paxhia's Moose ... sure hope my Elite flys as nice as his Moose does ...
what a joy !!! He let me fly it a little at S&F while on floats a few years
ago and it was nothing short of AWESOME. This time it was on the gear ...
as before, very responsive and stable ... sure handled nice ... really fired
me up to get this Elite flying ... THANKS AL !!!

formulae in the CARS, in comes out to almost 2200 lbs, as I recollect.

Also, something in writing confiming design agreement with the reduced
span spades on the elevator would be good to have on hand for my final
inspection. I did put in some doublers under the skins and on the tip
ribs to stiffen up the narrower spades, as this seemed prudent. There
are a couple of pictures on the wildcat BBS (www.dcsol.com).

everyone gets pretty lax since you really don't need MAM's blessing to do
these mods in Canada or the USA (disclaimer-of course I don't recommend

England and Oz may be a much different story. Nigel's in England and he
can't even install my firewall reinforcing plates unless he buys them
directly from me (ie he can't make them himself) and must buy all the
unlessparts from MAM to do any other mods to the airframe. Even with this he had
to get the authorities blessing in writing before doing any mods from the
way the kit comes..so for him this letter is worth it's weight in gold.

qualities of the aircarft?" I coould hardly stay quiet on that one, and

Factory Approval for Elite Elevator Mod.
Alan, I thought all the MDRA inspectors by now would have seen the letter
issued by one of the standards heads from TC that stated they didn't want to
have anything to do with nailing the builder down on his gross weight as
that could be construde as they had approved the design of the
airplane/drawings etc and it was up to the builder to put what ever he was
going to use on the paperwork. This came about from people asking for gross
weight increases after they were originally flying and some offices where
asking for engineering proof etc to prove what you were asking for was safe.
Since this is clearly outside the scope of the chapter 549 mandate (where it
states TC is not approving what you are building--just allowing) they/he
made this written statement that he didn't want drawings/engineering data
etc to prove the operating weight was safe as that could be constude as
being studied and accepted by TC and they don't want that liability.
Maybe the MDRA are sticking to their guns on this, but I undestood they were
being advised by TC to allow what ever the builder wants unless it is
clearly unsafe and then MDRA can refuse to do your final and hand it over to
TC for inspection. The other avenue is to get it flying without ruffling
feathers and then ask TC for an upgross on your weight after you have flown
off the 25 hours restriction....and another avenue is to call it a Hepburn
Special and do what you want from the get go.

Murphy Aircraft Mfg. Ltd. approves a 5% gross weight increase for all
aircraft models manufactured by Murphy.
To reduce the elevator pitch sensitivity of the Elite it has been tested
and approved to reduce the width of the aerodynamic balances by a
maximum of 4 inches at each end of the elevator. This in effect will
reduce the total elevator span to not less than 102 inches.
The mass balance of the elevator must be maintained at not less than
75%.

Futher to our telephone conversation, please provide some kind of
written evidence confirming design agreement with as high a gross weight
as you feel comfortable with for this airplane on floats. I trust you
will be able to at least endorse the 5% increase for floats to 1890 lbs,
but anything more would be greatly appreciated. When you apply the
formulae in the CARS, in comes out to almost 2200 lbs, as I recollect.
That would be beautiful!
Also, something in writing confiming design agreement with the reduced
span spades on the elevator would be good to have on hand for my final
inspection. I did put in some doublers under the skins and on the tip
ribs to stiffen up the narrower spades, as this seemed prudent. There
are a couple of pictures on the wildcat BBS (www.dcsol.com).
