Landing lights

Post by Ryan Mowat » Sat Feb 18, 2012 10:16 am

New tip lights (for new drooping tips) fit great and cost is reasonable.
Just installed the first one.

Murphy has kits for both the leading edge and the tip lights. I'm told,
unfortunately, that the droop tip lights are considerably more expensive
than the old style standard tip light kit. This is mainly due to the mfg
having to produce new tooling for the considerably different lens. The
leading edge double light kits are now manufactured in house at MAM.
Trevor
Y. used to put them together for MAM, but due to his job requirements
etc he
has had to stop production. The only difference between the kit Trevor
was
making and MAM's is the lens. MAM says they would have had to
significantly
increase the price of the kit in order to cover their cost to have the
lens
manufactured for them. Instead they have gone to a slightly lighter
gauge of
lexan and the lens is now just wrapped around the leading edge. It's
definitely acceptable and in the long run replacement in the field no
longer
requires ordering a manufactured part from MAM, just head down to the
nearest plastic shop / Home Depot and pick up a square foot of Lexan.

Of course there is nothing stopping anyone from making their own tip
lights.
I've done plenty of them using both rectangular and round halogen
lights.

I see some of the group out there is using the wing mounted landing
lights from MAM. Are these light kits the way to go? Are you happy
with
the results? Also which wing bay are you putting them in. I plan on
doing both wings.
Thanks,

landing lights

Post by Ralph Baker » Sat Feb 18, 2012 10:17 am

Mike,
We put a set of lights in each wing. The quality is high and the
instructions good. They can be installed after wing assembly. Our
decision to go with two sets is so a light would be instantly available
on approach to a "one way" strip if burnout occured and, more
importantly, a wig-wag was added for easier recognition on approach to
landing. Our CAP planes have this and they really stand out.

I keep saying...less than $50 and a few hours labour to do tip lights
yourself ...with aftermarket Hologens in either round or rectangular shape.
You gotta do a bunch of glass work after slicing and dicing MAM's standard
tips a anyhow to get them to fit right.

Well, I have been following this thread regarding landing light for a while. As some of you know I sell a 3" Halogen light, round, glass lens, 55w halogen H3 bulb. Comes with plastic housing and mounting bracket. They mount to the last rib on the wing and you make a lens in the leading edge of the wingtip. Cost you ask, 15.00 us + shipping. Just thought I would let you know.
BTW, for less than 50$ you can have lights......Wayne is correct......

Well, Here I go again. I have not been posting because I am making the home ready for sale. I (we) have had it with the cold. Moving to Florida, Mid July this year. I have kept it quiet as I cannot work in the shop as often as I need to.
It takes a lot of time to do a move like this. Just waiting for my wifes contract to be approved. If all else fails I will just move 70 miles north to Bay City .
Yes I will still make parts and will resume ASAP. I have a few orders to fill and that is keeping me very busy too. I am contiuning to work on addl molds for the Rebel, Elite, Moose and now for the Long EZ's.
Lots to do, so little time.

Wayne, hows the ice fishing? I may have to come back next winter and give it a try up there.
It sounds like you have been doing some ski flying. Lots of fun.

Good luck with your move Dave!

As for ice fishing...never much saw they joy in sitting on the ice staring
down a hole...but maybe I should give it a try one of these years! Been slow
from what I understand, but some really nice big fish for the odd lucky
sole. Here's the best I've seen this year.....
