Elite repairs

Post by Bob Andrews » Sat Feb 18, 2012 10:10 am

Hi,

We spent last weekend peeling 612E open. So far, all's well ... along with
the needed repairs, have a few updates to do (e.g. top cabin bulkhead
channel notches, etc.) ... soon she'll be as good as new ... MAM parts due
in tomorrow ... :-))

Folks:

I just uploaded a few pics of mods I have done on my Elite to this
under-utilised area of the BBS. I have had time to do this because my
"to do" list on the airplane has reached the point that all I have left
to do requires parts that are "in the mail".

I don't suppose anybody has a soft copy of an Elite flight manual they'd
be willing to share?

All,

I don't mean to use this BB as a repair log ... just looking to share status
in the hopes that your combined knowledge might expose things to watch out
for ... or do ... while its opened up. Appreciate any and all input ...
thanks.

Is the bellcrank I see on the cabin root rib a flap actuator? What is the
inside setup?

Looks like you have a bit of work to do there although less that we have
presently not having started the fuselage......

Cheers,

Elite repairs

Post by Wayne G. O'Shea » Sat Feb 18, 2012 10:10 am

Just playing with you Bob! Got nothing much else I can do right now. Lot of
damage at the cone to cabin junction though for a ground loop. You'll need
to take that section out back to the bulkhead most likely with a min 3"
overlap and triple row of rivets to regain about 83% sheet strength. Can
send you a couple pics tomorrow if you like....I've been here before (a few
times!)

Folks:

I just uploaded a few pics of mods I have done on my Elite to this
under-utilised area of the BBS. I have had time to do this because my
"to do" list on the airplane has reached the point that all I have
left
to do requires parts that are "in the mail".

I don't suppose anybody has a soft copy of an Elite flight manual
they'd
be willing to share?

Elite repairs

Roger that ... :-) Since the buckled side skin came back pretty good after
taking the corner wrap off ... wrestling now with whether or not to replace
it ... doesn't look bad at all right now. Aluminum prices have recently
shot through the roof ... hmmmm. You betcha on those pics ... thanks Wayne.

Can
send you a couple pics tomorrow if you like....I've been here before (a few
times!)

Elite repairs

Post by Bob Andrews » Sat Feb 18, 2012 10:10 am

Thanks Dave ... message received. I'll continue to post pics (w/ text) on
my server (www.aacnet.com/elite) ... will include links in posts when I make
updates. I'm very excited about this Elite ... and looking forward to its
next flight. Making the carry through repairs to support hosting the
conventional gear ... but its going straight onto the 2200 amphibs. The
forward left side skin got a wrinkle in the lower aft corner just forward of
the front carry through. These side skins are made from 0.020 stock. Even
though they have diagonal stiffeners ... I'm making new ones swapping both
sides out with 0.025 ... one down ... one to go. Also adding brake cylinder
lower attach points that mount on a plate that mount on the floor so that
rudder [only] deflections keep the brake peddles vertical ... for example,
it will be nice to have some left brake peddle when the left rudder peddle
pushed all the way.

Elite repairs

Further to my last, I believe yours must be the Elite Keith was telling me
about which will be next to go on his floats, so I believe you will be
getting the attachment arrangement he and I worked out.

When you rebuild that aft fuselage, make sure the float attach brackets are
placed as far outboard as possible. Also, be sure there is no forward
curvature of the curved section of the fuselage bulkhead. There is just
enough room to get a bolt in there without it contacting the skin ahead of
the bracket.

Regards, Al.

Have just looked at the disater on your website, and you have my sympathy.

The kit I bough (previously enjoyed) was for a trike, and had thicker corner
wraps top and bootom for the nose. I also used them aft of the cabin, which
migh have prevented the failure in that area, but in your case, something
had to give!

At least on floats you won't have any more trouble with side loads on the
tailwheel.

Al,

Thanks for the sympathy ... but really, it looks worse then it is. Mike
Pool dropped off the new carry throughs and other assorted parts on his way
through town from MAM yesterday evening .... :-)) Enjoyed meeting and
talking with him ... learned a lot !! I'll try to get hold of Sam today,
and see about getting a soft copy of his Elite manual. By the way, my Elite
is likely the one Keith was telling you about ... he went with me to get it
... we're repairing it in the MFC hangar. I live in Libby and work for
Keith part time. He's rebuilt/repaired more then one Murphy product ... and
I'm very grateful that he's in the loop (no pun intended). My Elite came
with a new set of MFC 2200's amphibs that have never been wet ... so they're
done, painted, and ready to mount ... once the Elite is ready that is. I am
building another set though ... for another project ... one float is ready
for bucking bottom skins ... the other just has the bulkhead J-stringers
installed ... think when their built (hopefully by the end of summer), I'll
sell 'em ... don't really need that project any more. With the Elite on the
front burner ... the float project in my garage has been put on the cold
counter top ... again (hehehe).

Is the bellcrank I see on the cabin root rib a flap actuator? What is the
inside setup?

Looks like you have a bit of work to do there although less that we have
presently not having started the fuselage......
