Well Neil, if you read any of my recent posts, you'll know that I
really like my 1800 amphibs on my Rebel, so won't dwell on that.

As for other floats for the Rebel, no direct experience, but know
a little about the Full Lotus and Montana. I have heard of a few
Rebels on the Full Lotus, and heard nothing bad about them, other
than they have more drag, which is understandable. However, they
do have the big advantage of being able to pull up to any
shoreline without having to worry about puncturing the bottom
skins. Also, you can use them on snow in the winter too. Not sure
if you can get amphibs for them, though. If you can, I would make
them removable to save on weight and more drag, for when you know
you'll be on the water for a while.

The Montana floats are a little bigger and heavier, and pricier,
too. They are very rugged and well built, though, from what I've
seen. They might be a better choice for an Elite, because of the
higher gross weight.

I have yet to see a set of fibreglass floats on a Rebel. There is
a local Rebel at my home field that has a set, but he still
hasn't mounted them. Theoretically, they might be more efficient
off the water because of the compound bottom design, but until he
flies it, I can't say.

Then if you see some for sale called Easy Lift, and they sound
like a good deal, just start running the other way. Others on the
list can tell you more about them.

i chose murphy amphibs they fit well they are the lightest by a good
margin they work reasonably well , although there are better floats if you
are using them on rough water a lot mainly because they have pretty flat
bottoms

i would really strongly suggest going amphib you can`t believe how much
your flying world opens up when you can land at airports as opposed to just
lakes and rivers i`m still flying right now!

Hi Neil,

I have only flown MAM floats on a Rebel. I flew a Super Cub on EDO's. If I
did it over again I would still use MAM floats, straight or amphip, depending
on your situation. The flexibility of amphibs is nice but there is a weight
penalty.

The 1800 are lighter and cheaper than other manufactured floats and both are
important in my book. If money is not an issue then MAM floats still weigh
less and ther Rebel will perform better and I want performance.

The floats are well built and de sighed for their intended purpose and a
good value.

Neil,

When I was poking around prior to settling on Murphy I visited an
unnamed factory in southwest Idaho that made lots of planes. The head
honcho of that outfit who I tend to believe told me two things about
other types of floats.

1. The Czech floats are essentially each a single compartment. Someone
may contradict this as I have not seen them but if so, a single
puncture could have consequences beyond the norm.

2. The plastic floats from Florida that are made by some "Aero???"
outfit were so poorly made that on delivery this aviation engineer
refused to put them on one of his factory's planes and simply
returned them to sender.

My own observations lead me to believe that you can't beat Murphy 1800's
for features and weight.

Thanks Walter - I have considered the Full Lotus option and really like
their versatility for both winter and summer operation. Unfortunately
they only make the amphibs for the lighter 1250's used on Ultralights.
Thanks for your input - especially on the Easy Lifts. BTW I have seen
some pics of your plane and like the paint scheme. Could you send me
some pics (off list) if you have them handy as I am looking at a new
look for mine - I promise I will not copy - just looking for ideas!

fancy turns to thoughts of floats for his 0320
Rebel. Any suggestions
out there for best value. Murphy? Montana? Czech?
Full Lotus? Composite
-Clamar??
I am sure that there are many opinions and
preferences and I will likely
be more confused after I read them all but would
appreciate any input on
the subject. I could consider both straight floats
and amphibs.

I live near the factory and have had a good look at them. They are well
constructed and beautifly finished. What I don't like is they are very
heavy and as near as I can tell the nosewheel doesn't have any over centre
locking mechanism it's just held down with hydraulic pressure.
Even with the problems I've had chasing hydraulic leaks I'm quite pleased
with my murphy floats.

Gilles...hands down I would go with Clair's CLAMAR 2250 Amphibs >>IF I HAD<<
an airplane in that weight category. They have removed a CONSIDERABLE amount
of weight out of them since the first prototypes construction by going to an
infusion process. Clair has also made a plug for a deeper float to be a 2500
(made a set for the big Bush Cady) and I also lent him my 3500 EDO's to get
a bottom plug off of to make 3500 Amphibs for the Moose. For the Rebel or
Elite.....these floats are overkill for bouyancy and weight about 80+ lbs
more than the MAM 1800's do.

from what Iwas fed, these floats meant good stuff to me also Aerocmp seams
to come close or even better being tail draggers. No tipping when landing on
water with the gear down

I'm surprised Clair is there...was supposed to be in Arizona for January.
Nothing for me..been there..done that and Clair is in my yard quite often
picking up flying wires, spreader bar etc.
