Al,
Were you able to find a Molex series with enough ampacity for the
heavier loads such as landing lights and pitot heat?

Ralph,
The series plug does use the larger pins, don't recall the size. Also use
50 W halogen bulbs for both landing and taxi lights with no problem (only 2
hours of night flying in over 400 hours) but the landings lights
continuously wig-wag with no problem.
I would not use them for pitot heat unless you used multiple pins, then I'm
not sure that is a good application some testing is in order first.

Don't know about the specific plugs you are discussing but on a general note
all manufacturers rate their plugs by max current draw and voltage.

A 50W light at 12 VDC will draw about 4.25 amps. Check with the plug
manufacturer and get their current rating for each size and type of connector.

FWIW: If you only know the Wattage the calculation is
Current(amps) = Watts/Voltage

With the proper rating information you can buy the correct size pins for what
ever you are connecting.

Talking with Brent at MAM today and he says Whelen was screwing him/MAM for
$16+US for a couple male plugs and two pins to finish of strobe installatons
as parts not included in install kit already bought..... so has sourced his
own replacements. Here are the prices for anyone that needs to finish off a
strobe wire end to mate up with their Whelen or Aeroflash ends (watch the
wire locations..not always the same!!!..but same plug from both mfgs). Also
has the shielded wire, but not sure where the price will be..contact him for

Watch out for some series of Molex connectors (like the Mini-Fit and
Micro-Fit). They have a tendency to melt at the higher quarter of their
current rating. Dolby Labs used them in a few models of their cinema
processors and they nearly all melted while constantly passing about 80%
of their rated current. Even replacing them with a new connector they
eventually melt again, so it doesn't look like Dolby got a bad (well
worse) batch.

Never had a problem with any constantly passing less than a 75% of their
rated current.

Just a note on the connector discussion, you can get these Molex parts at
digikey.com (large mail order electronics parts distributor). If you are in
Canada they even publish a Canadian price list that includes all but the taxes
(digikey.ca). The price includes brokerage which we have documented can cost an
arm and a leg.

I use them often for things I buy for my car & plane projects and prices are
very competitive. BTW, if you contact them they will send you a humungeous
catalog with plenty of interesting electronic goodies. I have picked up LED lit
switches & indoor-outdoor LCD thermometers, heat shrink tubing etc. etc.

digikey.com (large mail order electronics parts distributor). If you are
in
Canada they even publish a Canadian price list that includes all but the
taxes
(digikey.ca). The price includes brokerage which we have documented can
cost an
arm and a leg.

I use them often for things I buy for my car & plane projects and prices
are
very competitive. BTW, if you contact them they will send you a
humungeous
catalog with plenty of interesting electronic goodies. I have picked up
LED lit
switches & indoor-outdoor LCD thermometers, heat shrink tubing etc. etc.

www.alliedelec.com is similar and sometimes better prices.
US$6.50 for next day delivery to Canuckland includes shipping and brokerage.

Now if only ASS would set up a similar deal - eh?
