No more AIP inserts !

Good news for Canadian pilots - no more sticking inserts into your AIP
binders !! Last AIP updates come in April - after that, new format,
and bound !

Also, the AIP will be available online, and d/l able, as a PDF !

Talk about leaping into the 20th century !! :-)

No more AIP inserts !

Post by Wayne G. O'Shea » Sat Feb 18, 2012 10:02 am

Yah...but like anything else our Government does...there's always a catch.
See below from Rob Prior's digging around:

But much to my surprise, I found that you can now *download* the AIP,
for free, in it's entirety, from the TC website (warning, it's about
20MB, so it'll take a while). This is excellent news for anyone who has
ever wanted to find something in the AIP but didn't know where to
look... Now you can open up the .PDF, and use the built-in SEARCH
function to find things. Finally!

HOWEVER! It's not all good news, and my elation turned out to be
short-lived. If you read the page linked below, you will discover that
the AIP will only be published until October of 2005, when it will be
discontinued in favour of a new document called the Transport Canada
Aeronautical Information Manual (TC-AIM). The TC-AIM will be available
for free for all pilots for the first year of issue, but after that it
will only be available "for a small fee."

So now that they've made a plain-language version of the regs convenient
and useful by being text searchable, they're going to phase it out, and
replace it with something we'll have to pay for! I'd wager that the new
manual will not be freely downloadable either, so they can maximize
their return on the new fee-gathering document. So, back to hunting
manually, through an unfamiliar document, for our answers.

Thanks, Transport Canada, for finally making the decision to put the AIP
online, after years of requests from pilots. But what bonehead came up
with the idea of discontinuing it less than a year later?

Thatt is good news I'm about 20 years behind on my updates. After a certain
point I just started chucking them as soon as I received them. A new AIP
would make wonderful beside reading as an insomnia cure. :)
