Rebel rudder gusset

Post by Jesse Jenks » Sat Feb 18, 2012 9:53 am

I noticed while looking in the picture archives under the FUS-30 fix stuff,
which I guess is Wayne's plane because of all the green paint, that he put a
big gusset on the bottom of the rudder as well. Is this a mod also, or did
the rudder just get damaged somehow?
Thanks
Jesse

Jesse...when flying skis and they stick and you find yourself staring out
the windshield at the ground......remember to push one rudder pedal all the
way to the floor before the tail comes back down!!! Oh Yah! You don't have
that problem in CA...most of the time!

That's one cause.... but thought about that again. That green 'plane in
those archives pics is George Christie's that I fixed after their landing
gear departed on one side. Lower end of rudder got buckled in the event and
that was the repair for it.

Rebel rudder gusset

Post by Jesse Jenks » Sat Feb 18, 2012 9:54 am

Wayne,
I had to think about that one for a minute. So what happens is that when the
tail comes down hard it hits the tailwheel, and you have to "kick" it out of
the way? You'd have to be in a pretty mellow state to remember that. Is that
mostly a problem with the MAM aluminum tail spring, or can it happen with
any setup?
Thanks
Jesse

Rebel rudder gusset

Post by Wayne G. O'Shea » Sat Feb 18, 2012 9:54 am

Yes Jesse..the natural reaction is to freeze with both feet jammed against
the pedals waiting to see pieces of your prop go flying. Then when the tail
comes back down from that height, with no forward motion, the tail spring
gives enough to hit the bottom of the rudder. Can happen with either the
alum or fiberglass springs supplied with the kis. Might even happen with the
steel one that I use and recommend replacing the factory springs with. If
you push one pedal to the floor instead...the rudder will be out of the way
of the tail spring/wheel.
