Canoe carrying ...anyone done it yet?

I'll tell you how a little ol' Rebel works with one this summer. Been
searching for the wife's high priced Christmas present (a light 12 footer)
for a couple weeks....and it's going to get flown into the land locked lakes
around our place on Temagami...... if of course I can pry it from her hands
that is!! )

No the portabote is for the bigger lakes! )

Got two of them now and my folding 4HP Evinrude !! Just figured a ganoe was
easier to drop off the side and paddle around some of the smaller lakes with
my fly rod for trout!

You shouldn't have any trouble with a small canoe. I've flown 18ft square
stern freighters and 12ft aluminum boats on my C180. Watch the gusty weather
and keep your speed down.

yeah the backcast thing would make fishing off the float difficult. I went
fishing north of Parry sound for an afternoon this summer. It was pretty
cool standing on the float and casting while drifting down the lake. I had
my blow up life vest on but I thought afterwards a line around my waist and
cleated off would have been a good idea. If I had of fallen in the plane
would have drifted away faster than I can swim.

Hi Wayne,
Must have missed the original thread on the canoe carrying. Was it u that
was asking? Use to fly a 16' plastic (70lb) on the side of my 1650's on a
Christavia with 115 hp. Put two unsitely eyebolts with reinforcement plates
on the outside of the floats to tie to. Only fly with the top laying against
the floats or upside down. Have experience with the right side up but we
won't go there today! Just the right distance between where the end will
drag in the water and the prop clearance with a 16' canoe can be tricky.

Hi Wayne and thanks very much for the pics.
It gives alot of perspective to what I have to do. Yea, I had to put
eyebolts on the sides of the floats because the struts were quite short and
not really anything there to secure the canoe to the plane. One side came to
about the top of the struts and the other was about a foot over the side of
the float. I used large hardware bolts and they also provided a "rest" for
the canoe. I haven't been up close to a Rebel on floats but I believe from
what I see on pics that the struts are much longer than what I had. Because
my old canoe was plastic or PVC, I felt it would prevent damage to the paint
if I tied it with the belly against the floats and not the aluminum gunnels.
I always heard "upside down only" but had to find out why. The turbulance
was so great over the tail when I leveled out in cruise, I thought it was
going to rip the stick out of my hand. Skidded all the way to the lake.
Returned it later that fall up side down and the flight was uneventful, just
a bit slower.

Back to the windshield. I see that the top piece is quite curved on the one
I have and if not weighted down, sticks up about four inches or more in the
cage area. It really wants to rise up with a fair bit of force and I don't
see anything there between the upper retainer and the top of the side strip
to help keep it down. I understand that the sealants will hold this down
sufficiently to prevent it from creeping up. Without installing the
"eyebrows" I thought that cutting the top off just behind the cage plus the
retainer would prevent this. Thanks again.
