Rebel firewall dimensions

Post by Mike Kimball » Sat Feb 18, 2012 9:50 am

Can someone tell me what the dimensions are for a Rebel firewall? I'm trying
to see if the Aircraft Spruce MC-3B nosebowl will work for my Super Rebel.
If the Super Rebel firewall is not much bigger than a Rebel I think it will
work without looking too funny with a sharp angle from the firewall to the
nosebowl. My Chevy is only about 24" across at the widest and the MC-3B is
35 inches across. Plus, the PSRU is much smaller in width up where the
nosebowl sits.

Rebel firewall dimensions

Mike,

I'm not at my hangar at the moment, but I can give you a pretty close
estimate. The width of the top engine mount bolt holes on my firewall is 36 &
15/16ths inches across, measured hole center to hole center. Add maybe two
inches to that should give you a pretty close overall width.

The vertical distance between the top and bottom engine mount bolt holes on
my firewall is exactly 20 inches. There is about 8 inches of firewall above
the top mounts, so I would estimate overall height is approximately 29 inches
or so.

If no one else can give you more exact dimensions I will measure my firewall
for you on Monday.

Mike, you should give MAM a call and ask what they used on the "Rotax" V6
plane... that seems like it should be similar to what you're trying to do
with the V8.

Rebel firewall dimensions

Yes indeed the one I saw was impressive. A large NACA type inlet was
sculpted into the bottom which could presumably be mated to a straight
through radiator. It is nice to have an inlet that wants to flow more
at high angle of attack (climb) to offset the increased difficulty of
exhausting the air below the firewall at high angle of attack. I have a
partial photo here somewhere if anyone wants me to find and post it.

Even with a horizontally opposed Subaru (and a short psru) one can use a
narrower nose bowl than what is used for a Lycoming. I am NOT saying
that is a good reason for making a nosebowl though ;(
