lycoming mount

Post by Dale Fultz » Sat Feb 18, 2012 9:50 am

Is there anyone on the list that can help to change or make a mount or
change one of my mounts to fit my Moose. I bought a firewall forward
engine w/mount also bought a mount from MAM that was supposed to fit my
engine but now I find out it doesn't. So now I have one mount that one
end fits the aircraft and another mount that the other end fits the
engine. Can someone direct me to someone that can help. Thanks Dale

Hi Dale !

I would think that Murphy would exchange the mount they supplied
if it really doesn't fit your engine !! What engine are you using ???

I planned on putting a IO540-M1B5D on it if I can get a mount to work.

lycoming mount

The factory did install an IO-540 - but not sure of the model. Guess
you have a line on one of these cheap ??? Personally, I'd just go for
an O-540 - keeping it simple, and less expensive. With low compression,
it can burn mogas in a pinch - the pinch might come within a couple of
years, if governments have their way !! :-(

Can you change the manifold, or whatever it is that's interfering
with the factory mount ?? Might be easier than building a custom mount !
Murphy may have a couple of different mounts available, or be willing
to make one up --- worth asking.

A real long shot - the FBO at Smoketown, PA had a really good
(and inexpensive) local welder. He helped me out with a custom exhaust
pipe setup a few years back - don't know if that's close to you, but might
be worth a phone call if nothing else appears .....

You could also get in touch with Paul Workman at Ohio Aircraft Interiors,
in Zanesville, OH. He's done many complete restorations, and might have
a lead for you .... I <think> his number is still: (740) 452-1636

Al Paxhia

lycoming mount

Post by Al Paxhia » Sat Feb 18, 2012 9:50 am

Dale,
Could it be an ear problem? I'm not familiar with the M1b5d but there are
both short and long ears on these engines. My IO540 came with the long ears
and I had to swap for the short ears because that was the size MAM designed
the mount for.

I believe they still do engine mounts but I haven't talked to them in a
few years.

rognal

lycoming mount

Post by rognal » Sat Feb 18, 2012 9:50 am

Dale,
...also bought a mount from MAM that was supposed to fit my
engine but now I find out it doesn't.
In Nov '02 I purchased an engine mount from MAM built specifically for the IO-
240B engine I am installing in my Rebel. I mounted it to the firewall
assuming it would fit the yet to be purchased engine. The engine was
purchased a year later and it did not fit the mount.

When I advised Brian at MAM Tech, and sent him some digital photo's, he
immediately offered to build me a new mount. Since I already had the firewall
drilled for the original engine mount, I was concerned that it might be
difficult to build a new mount that would match the existing bolt pattern.
Brian asked for the pattern measurments from my firewall, which I sent to him.

When I received the 'new' engine mount I found that it fit the engine, but it
didn't fit the firewall! Exactly the problem I was concerned about! When I
advised Brian of this, he questioned my ability to take accurate
measurements. As it turned out, he had simply ignored the measurements I sent
him.

After exchanging more digital photos with him proving my measurements were
accurate, he offered to build me a third engine mount. This time I went to
the expense of shipping both the original and the 'new' (2nd) engine mount
back to MAM at my expense so that he would have an exact pattern to copy from.

In the end the third engine mount fit at both ends. I was only out about $25
USD for the shipping costs.

Outside of my frustration and building time lost, I have to say that MAM
responded honorably throughout the situation.

Anyway, the whole point of this story is to let you know that MAM should fix
the problem if they sold you something that doesn't fit what it is supposed
to fit. And they do have a welder on staff that builds the engine mounts. At
least they did when I went through this (summer 04).

Good luck,

Roger Hoffman #687R
Eugene, OR USA!
