List fund raiser?

Post by Scott Aldrich » Sat Feb 18, 2012 9:49 am

Mike, have you given any thought to having a list fund raiser? Do you have
a Paypal account or an easy way for someone to send a donation?

Like a lot of others I also use the Matronics lists by Matt Dralle. Every
November he has a fund raiser to support his lists. He just published this
year's list of fund raiser contributors. With 969 contributors,
conservatively, he probably brought in $20,000 and possibly closer to
$50,000.

Obviously the numbers here would be tiny (okay, minuscule) compared to
Matt's so I doubt we could put your kids through college :), but even a
small amount could help with back up drives, etc.

I suspect you do this as a hobby and wouldn't ask for donations via the
list. If you don't want to publicly publish a way to send a donation, send
me your address off list.

Thanks,
Scott

Hope the drive is much more successful than when Daryl spent countless
days/hours writting programming and restoring the archives mail
collection.... from my saved inboxes! He got a cool $15 from all the
appreciative list members....and those two guys (thanks R&W) didn't need any
of that information anymore!!

I'd too would be willing to help out, either with funds or with
technical expertise (so you can have a vacation/weekend off without
having to monitor status for instance).

List fund raiser?

Post by Mike Davis » Sat Feb 18, 2012 9:49 am

Hi Scott, I have in the past asked for donations when I needed to invest
more than a couple hundred dollars into the system and or software that I
use to support the list. Beyond upgrade costs, I probably spend about $25 a
month in direct expenses that I could eliminate if I wasn't running the
list, which I'm happy to pay for all the information I've collected over the
last 7 years.

That said, I don't have a problem accepting donations ;-). The last big
server upgrade had nearly half of it paid for by a donation made by one
member... who told me specifically no to spend it on the list. Sorry about
that, and thanks again. With 190 list members now, $2 a piece would more
than cover the costs annually. I do have a paypal account, which is
probably the easiest way to get me money... I found out last time that my
credit union won't take checks in Canadian dollars, and none of the banks
will exchange it since I don't have an account. Go figure. My paypal
account is under mike.davis@dcsol.com.

Hey Wayne, does Daryl have a paypal account? I'd be happy to publish a link
for him on the site, he certainly deserves more than $15 for all the work he
did.

Thanks, Mike

List fund raiser?

Post by George Coy » Sat Feb 18, 2012 9:49 am

I guess us commercial types can put up a few bucks too.
While we are talking money, folks should know that with the dollar taking a
bath with respect to the EURO, i expect a price increase on engines again
this January. (I am beginning to understand how you Canadians feel). By the
way, we are actually now shipping Russian airplanes into Europe. It looks
like 3-Yak 54's and one Sukhoi 29 going from U.S. to Europe due to the
strong EURO.

Mike, Send me your snail mail address again and we will put a check in the
mail. ( I do not believe in PAYPAL after a friend got burned by them by
mistake).

List fund raiser?

Post by Mike Davis » Sat Feb 18, 2012 9:49 am

PayPal is a web service that allows you to send payments online. Used
primarily by Ebay for a long time, and recently purchased by Ebay, it is now
used quite often by any business to take payments online. For those who
setup their own PayPal accounts, you can have your payments directly debited
against a bank account if you want, or you can use a credit card as the
source of funds. But you don't have to create an account to make a donation
using a credit card. It doesn't cost the person sending money anything to
use the service, but the person receiving money pays a transaction fee just
like a merchant taking a credit card does. George apparently knows of
somebody who had a bad experience with them, but that is the first I have
heard of. I personally have never had any trouble with the service, and I
have used it quite a bit.

List fund raiser?

Post by Mike Davis » Sat Feb 18, 2012 9:49 am

Thanks Wayne,

I've added a second PayPal link on the web site for Daryl O'Shea. Just a
reminder, Daryl spent the better part of a week writing a custom program
that extracted all the old list messages from Wayne's e-mail program, then
repost them to a special forum I set up, with the original date/time stamp,
and in the original order they were posted in. This allowed me to
completely restore all the message archives. Daryl's work helped recover
about 10,000 messages that would have otherwise been lost... that's over
half of all the messages posted in 7 years! Not sure what a young freelance
programmer makes now adays, but several years ago when I was consulting, the
going rate was $95 to $135 an hour.

How much do I want?! Well let's see... Mike Kimball figured he'd spent
about $36,600 on his V8 installation so far, and since I'm planning to
install a V8 also, that would be a good starting point!

Seriously, $2 a piece is what I wrote, and that would roughly cover the
recurring expenses involved with the system if everybody contributed. As
for covering the effort that I put into it... at a fair market rate, I'd
have that engine paid for by now! Believe it or not, I thoroughly enjoy
working on the system. I even enjoy it when the entire system crashes and I
have to rebuild it from scratch! But only when I have a current backup so I
don't lose any data.

The problem here is that I willing do this voluntarily, and at no point have
I considered charging for any of it... I do this for my own benefit and
enjoyment as much as any other reason. So if you feel you want to chip in,
great, if not, no big deal. I will use what ever is given for the benefit
of the builders list. If I found myself with $20,000 like the aerolectrics
list... we've have a state of the art system with a full T1 connecting it!
More likely like Scott pointed out, the extra money from this may be used to
secure an extra drive for backup purposes or something of the like. I'm
currently looking at some additional software that would allow an online
classifieds or auction section to the archive site, so everyone could post
those "extra" items they end up with where other builders will see them. In
fact, enough money for this software has already been donated today, but
I'll wait until it's fully evaluated before spending my new windfall. ;-)
Items like the new drive controller that was recently purchased to fix the
problems experienced with the RAID would also be easier to come by... the
wife keeps my hobby budget pretty tight around the holidays!

G'day Mike !

$2 a piece sounds AWFULLY cheap for all the effort you put in ....
or am I reading this stuff wrong ?

So just tell us how much you would like us all to put in.

Thanks for all your great work !!!

Hi Scott, I have in the past asked for donations when I needed to
invest
more than a couple hundred dollars into the system and or software
that I
use to support the list. Beyond upgrade costs, I probably spend about
$25 a
month in direct expenses that I could eliminate if I wasn't running
the
list, which I'm happy to pay for all the information I've collected
over the
last 7 years.

That said, I don't have a problem accepting donations ;-). The last
big
server upgrade had nearly half of it paid for by a donation made by
one
member... who told me specifically no to spend it on the list. Sorry
about
that, and thanks again. With 190 list members now, $2 a piece would
more
than cover the costs annually. I do have a paypal account, which is
probably the easiest way to get me money... I found out last time that
my
credit union won't take checks in Canadian dollars, and none of the
banks
will exchange it since I don't have an account. Go figure. My paypal

account is under mike.davis@dcsol.com.

Hey Wayne, does Daryl have a paypal account? I'd be happy to publish
a link
for him on the site, he certainly deserves more than $15 for all the
work he
did.

Thanks, Mike

Mike, have you given any thought to having a list fund raiser? Do
you
have
a Paypal account or an easy way for someone to send a donation?

Like a lot of others I also use the Matronics lists by Matt Dralle.
Every
November he has a fund raiser to support his lists. He just
published
this
year's list of fund raiser contributors. With 969 contributors,
conservatively, he probably brought in $20,000 and possibly closer
to
$50,000.

Obviously the numbers here would be tiny (okay, minuscule) compared
to
Matt's so I doubt we could put your kids through college :), but
even a
small amount could help with back up drives, etc.

I suspect you do this as a hobby and wouldn't ask for donations via
the
list. If you don't want to publicly publish a way to send a
donation,
send
me your address off list.

Thanks,
Scott

List fund raiser?

Post by bransom » Sat Feb 18, 2012 9:49 am

Perhaps we should assume 1/2 of the list subscribers are serious addicts, the
rest more along the lines of uncertain or lurking and probably disinclined to
contribute (yet). So us addicted half, $5 is painless and we could see if
that covers the estimated cost. We're all greatful for your efforts Mike. I
wouldn't build an airplane without a good list and list group. We should take
it upon ourselves to remember doing this annually, and Mike, I hope you will
tell us if this hobby needs a little more $. The advice and moral support
here is ....priceless.

How much do I want?! Well let's see... Mike Kimball figured he'd spent
about $36,600 on his V8 installation so far, and since I'm planning to
install a V8 also, that would be a good starting point!

List fund raiser?

Post by Aurele Lavigne » Sat Feb 18, 2012 9:49 am

Not sure of my classification "addict" or "lurker", so took no chances and
sent my $5.00.

While I'm not a builder and only understand 1/2 of what is discussed (make
that a 1/4, I'm CDN and French to boot) I sure have learned a lot from the
list and always know I can get answers from all you experienced fellows when
I need it.

So, thanks to Mike for the list and all those who contribute to it.
