Spring Gear

Post by brad » Sat Feb 18, 2012 9:46 am

Good Morning All,

I will be working on the cage over the next few months and installing
spring gear. I have seen the floor stiffeners in the archives. I am
looking for any other suggestions out there for extra reinforcing that I
should look at.

As I have not started that area yet this is prime time to get ideas.

Thanks,

Brad

Spring Gear

Post by Legeorgen » Sat Feb 18, 2012 9:46 am

Brad,

How new is your kit? There have been several changes to the spring gear over
the years. Make sure your read the tech service bulletins on the web site.

Very early kits (1993-96?) had shorter SG reinforcing plates that did not
extend past the inside corner raps. They also had different AN bolt sizes
(larger) through the carry through tubes. I think they down sized them for edge
clearance.

The last MAM change has 2" x? angle laid over the carry through tubes on the
inside to reinforce the tubes so the bolts don't rip out of the tubes on a
hard landing or hitting a rut.

Many builders have put solid blocks inside the tubes in place of the crush
tubes. There are other things different builders have done over the years and
you may want to read through the archives and research it.

I have an older kit with the shorter SG plates and have only added MAM's 2"
angle fix which is all that MAM says is needed. I had 180 hours on a maintained
dirt strip before changing to amphibs and had no problems with the gear. But
I would not set the Rebel down in fields like I would the Kitfox, which is a
lighter plane.

If you intend to operate out of fields and dirt roads I would consider
changing the gear to Wayne's gear or similar. Other wise I think the spring gear it
fine if you don't mind the weight penalty.

Bruce
