Moose tailwheel stinger
A friend of mine has a "surplus" 10" tailwheel assembly off of a 185 (or
a Scott tailwheel). The problem is that I believe (haven't checked it
yet myself) it is for a 1 1/16" stinger whereas my Moose has a 1"
stinger.
Does anyone know what is involved in changing my stinger to the larger
size (major disassembly & rework or a relatively straight-forward
process)?

I don't know Scott...I'd have to go out and open up the marine container to
have a look at my Moose...but don't see reaming a 1/16th out of that steel
spring retainer ball (at the tail post) and relieving the sides of the
Cessna Stinger slightly (if even needed) to bolt in on the multi hole
bracket. Cessna's got increased in size as they used to be 7/8 or so and
Broke quite often.
Is the MAM one 1" or 7/8" ??

I have read of problems with the Rebel tail wheel from MAM. Two questions. 1) has the moose/2500 tail wheel presented a problem, demonstrated issues, etc. 2) Is there reason to believe it will?

A 10" Scott tailwheel would work good but keep in mind the tailsprings are
totally different as the Cessna is tapered and bent. The Cessna sizes were
7/8, 15/16, 1, and 1 1/8. I do not believe there was ever a 1 1/16" spring.
The nuckle at the back of your tailcone would be a tough one to drill out
and possibly dificult to remove depending how it was installed. Also hard to
adapt the 1" tailspring to a bigger hole in the Scott as it takes a fixture
to hold it in place while drilled. A new 1" casting is around $350 I think.
Another option is the new Alaska Bushwheel tailwheel which has just come
available in a 3400 size but at least $1000. You may not like it on pavement
though. If you shop around you will find a Scott with a 1" hole at a good
price.

A 10" Scott tailwheel would work good but keep in mind the tailsprings are
totally different as the Cessna is tapered and bent. The Cessna sizes were
7/8, 15/16, 1, and 1 1/8. I do not believe there was ever a 1 1/16" spring.
The nuckle at the back of your tailcone would be a tough one to drill out
and possibly dificult to remove depending how it was installed. Also hard to
adapt the 1" tailspring to a bigger hole in the Scott as it takes a fixture
to hold it in place while drilled. A new 1" casting is around $350 I think.
Another option is the new Alaska Bushwheel tailwheel which has just come
available in a 3400 size but at least $1000. You may not like it on pavement
though. If you shop around you will find a Scott with a 1" hole at a good
price.

A friend of mine has a "surplus" 10" tailwheel assembly off of a 185 (or
a Scott tailwheel). The problem is that I believe (haven't checked it
yet myself) it is for a 1 1/16" stinger whereas my Moose has a 1"
stinger.
Does anyone know what is involved in changing my stinger to the larger
size (major disassembly & rework or a relatively straight-forward
process)?
Following recent discussions on this list regarding problems with the
MAM tailwheel, I'd like to switch mine.
