Rivet head bur
Rivet head bur
I know I am not the only one that has little burs on a lot of the Avex rivet
heads after pulling them with the cheapo air puller. It is caused by the
pulling head being slightly to large for the rivet. They are time consuming
to remove.
The "fix" from Steve: Take the smallest rivet pulling head (steal one off
your even cheaper WalMart hand puller, it should fit) and drill it out to an
exact fit for the RV14 rivet and you won't get the bur anymore.

We noticed this too and have been using the smallest nose that the mandrel will
fit through and having good luck. The only down side is the gun is reluctant to
give up the mandrel every time.

And hopefully you guys don't have any of the bad batch of 1410 rivets that MAM sent out many years ago with the kits. These were also breaking off too high and leaving burrs to stick above the heads. They were supposed to have been all recalled.

We had a few that the stem broke off high on the bottom wing skin, not a lot
though so I don't think it was any of the recalled rivets. Ground those all
off with the dremel also.

Sometimes if the tip is a real close fit this happens...but usually if you
take the nose off, unlock the lock nut and move the tip assembly forward a
thread or so...then relock. This lets the tips assembly get pushed a little
further forward when the gun retracts and opens the puller jaws a bit more.

We noticed this too and have been using the smallest nose that
drillmandrel will
fit through and having good luck. The only down side is the gun
is reluctant to
give up the mandrel every time.

Even easier might be to try putting a few drops of oil into the air line
first. If I forget to do this every thousand rivets or so my puller gets
stiff and doesn't retract (go forward?) all the way...

mandreladjust it so it will let it go, I don't think there is enough clearance or
perhaps alignment in the tool??

Rivet head bur
To machine the head nose, do you just use a drill? A 132' or a 118'....
We may do it with the 3/16'' rivet to.... About the "bad" batch of
rivet... with my kit I have receive many type of rivets.... 1/8 and 3/16.
When I make a "bad hole" I had to go for a 3/16 which is big... Las t yeay
at the Sun'Fun, I have buy some 5/32"(that I have not use yet... may be my
"technic" is better) but they have the "gold" mandrel. Could I use them any
way ? Is there oversize compare to a 1/8' will compensate for the ?
quality..
