I had the list server shut down most of last night, so I could finally
reconstruct the rebel-builders archive. Over the years the message archives
had gotten broken up into several different pieces, and I've been wanting to
rebuild a single database with all the messages in it in chronological
order. This amounted to 17,931 messages... from 3 different databases with
about 24,000 messages combined, so it wasn't simply a matter of combining
them... I wanted to accomplish this without duplicates. Once a new database
was constructed, the list server had to be allowed to "send" all these
messages to reset the message pointers... to accomplish this I unsubscribed
everybody from the lists... then subscribed you again when it was finished.
If you received a "Welcome" message, this is why.

Anyway, mission accomplished. You will now find a single archive conference
for the builders list, with every message ever posted. This should make
searching the archives much simpler.

Mike, I am using a newsreader. It could be just on this computer but from
9-16-02 back to the start of the list in 2001 the Subject and Sender do not
match the email that opens up.

I didn't even think about this... in order to get you're news reader to
match up... :-( you're going to have to delete the account, set it back up
and let it download all the headers again. The newsgroup is still called
the same, but the message numbers don't match anymore. As for the anonymous
access... ahem, one of our members had made the "rebel" account his own...
this caused the security level to be updated. I put it all back the way it
was, and hopefully made it so it wont happen again.

Not sure what's up with the new account... I didn't make any changes to any

it's own security profile, so it should not have affected any personal

Glad to here it's working like it's supposed to... the rebel/builder account
was never supposed to work via NNTP... you need to use a personal account.
If you don't have an account on the archive already, go to
http://www.dcsol.com/wins.htm and click the option to create one. Likewise,
the rebel/builder account will no longer be able to post messages directly
into the archives... it can still view and search, but not post. The idea
is that we would like to know who the message came from. ;-)

I thought I signed up for one a long time ago, but forgot what it
was. Now it won't let me create a new one when I go to that link
because it says that I am already signed in/authorized

but it doesn't seem to log me off, as I still get the same

Glad to here it's working like it's supposed to... the
rebel/builder account
was never supposed to work via NNTP... you need to use
a personal account.
If you don't have an account on the archive already, go to
http://www.dcsol.com/wins.htm and click the option to
create one. Likewise,
the rebel/builder account will no longer be able to
post messages directly
into the archives... it can still view and search, but
not post. The idea
is that we would like to know who the message came from. ;-)

I notice that my news reader won't work anymore. The
ID was rebel
and the password was builder, but it won't accept it
now. What ID
and password have to be used now for the news reader?

I didn't even think about this... in order to get
you're news reader to
match up... :-( you're going to have to delete the
account, set it back up
and let it download all the headers again. The
newsgroup is still called
the same, but the message numbers don't match anymore.
As for the anonymous
access... ahem, one of our members had made the
"rebel" account his own...
this caused the security level to be updated. I put
it all back the way it
was, and hopefully made it so it wont happen again.

Archive maintenance

You have to close your browser to log off... the log off button at the top
just sends you back to my homepage... but the browser doesn't forget your
user information until you close it. So open a new browser window and go to
http://www.dcsol.com/wins, then click the link to create an account. Or
click on/cut and paste this link into a new browser window:
https://www.dcsol.com/signup

If you created your original account before the crash in May, you'll need to
create a new one anyway.

I thought I signed up for one a long time ago, but forgot what it
was. Now it won't let me create a new one when I go to that link
because it says that I am already signed in/authorized
(rebel/builder). So I click on the Logoff link on another page,
but it doesn't seem to log me off, as I still get the same
message when I try to create an account.

Archive maintenance

Post by Walter Klatt » Sat Feb 18, 2012 9:35 am

Yup, that worked and I've got my newsreader back. I use it
sometimes to look at new postings and to find something instead
of the archives, and it also allows me to easily copy an old
message that I might want to save in another Outlook folder for
future reference. And it serves as a back-up for posting if my
email messages get rejected by DCSOL as was happening a couple
months ago.
