A whitelist on Mike's end won't solve the problem. Mike's server _IS_
trying to send the message to you, Shaw just won't accept the message from
Mike's server.

At the moment, I think I am actually blacklisted, because not only do my
messages not go through, but I don't get any bounce message either. So for
now am using the newsreader to post to the list, which by the way is still
Shaw, but not my email account.
Can't say why your message isn't being received by the list server. Maybe
your subscription got dropped? If that's the case, ignore what I said
above about his server trying to send you mail.

Hi Walter !

One thing that would REALLY help is if you could get your own
login to Wildcat - (you could use Bigfoot ;-) ) I think this is easy to
do, and then your messages to the list would have YOUR login in the
header instead of the generic 'Rebel' - making them easier to pick out.

Thanks !

Yeah, might still do that, but am hoping that this will get resolved. I have
been on this list with my Shaw account for many, many years, and only had
this problem recently. I don't think we are going to get Shaw to change
anything. That would be like asking your favourite software company
(Microslop and Windoze) to make a change to Outlook just for us. Ain't gonna
happen.

So are you going to wait until the snow flies before you come and pick up
your floats?

Mike thinks or was told that it's a problem all Shaw users are having when
receiving email from _anybody_, not just the this list. I still can't
fathom half of the highspeed users in western Canada not raising hell over
such an issue though.

When I get a bit of time to play I'll see if I can get myself tarpitted by
Shaw's MX servers.

Daryl
Shaw just made a change on August 16th to incorporate this new policy of
turning off their inbound mail servers... they also configured their 2
inbound mail servers in a round robin on that day... before that they had a
prime and secondary with 10 & 15 preference settings. Never had a problem
with Shaw before August 16th. I even sent their network engineers log files
from my server from the 15th and the 16th to show them how the change was
affecting things. The initial problem was that one of the servers wasn't
responding... before the 16th you'd just use the secondary, but as of the
16th with them in a round robin for the same host name, it was a 50/50 shot
whether you'd get a connection or not. There have been fewer problems with
that lately though.

Delivery Failures

Post by Mike Davis » Sat Feb 18, 2012 9:31 am

OK, just checked the user database, and Walter is actively joined with the
e-mail address of walter.klatt@shaw.ca. I don't see any problems in my
server logs with sending list messages to Walter or the other shaw.ca users.
But on a message Walter tried to post yesterday my system was still unable
to get a response from the Shaw server at 64.59.134.8... this has been the
biggest problem I've seen since this all started. However, since this
message was addressed to rebel-builders@dcsol.com, it should have bypassed
the filter, and it didn't... now I just have to figure out why.

Also, when you post using your newsreader Walter, you are only using Shaw
for your internet connection... you are connecting directly to my news
server both for reading and posting... this completely bypasses Shaw's
servers.

An interesting note for Daryl... I just tried connecting to the above Shaw
host 5 times in a row manually... One time I got a could not connect to host
on port 25, 3 times it took from 25 to 45 seconds after connecting before I
got their mail servers helo, and the 5th try it connected and popped up
right away! Frustrating... I guess I'll have to look into what the timeout
is for my smtp server. Their other inbound server at 24.71.223.11 works
every time... just tried it 5 times and one time it took 3 seconds, every
other time it come right up. I think part of the problem with Walter not
able to get any messages through, where as he used to get half of them
through is that it appears from my test tonight that Shaw no longer has the
two IPs in a round robin... every time I do a look up it returns:

Name: idcmail.shaw.ca
Addresses: 64.59.134.8, 24.71.223.11

I think what is happening is that my server is connecting to 64... but it's
timing out before it ever responds. If I could just force it to connect to
the 24... system! aarg!

OK, all mail addressed to any of the list addresses is now white listed, and
will not be checked by my spam filter. I had made the entry already telling
it to accept anything addressed to "rebel-builders@dcsol.com", but computers
being the way that they are, that didn't work... because what the mail
server sees is "<rebel-builders@dcsol.com>". Since I didn't have the little
brackets in there, it didn't match!

Ahhh, like magic, came right through and immediately. If it works
like this all the time, that will be great and back to normal.

Thanks again, Mike. Your effort to get this resolved is much
appreciated. I consider this list just as valuable to a builder
and flier as the manual and Murphy's technical support. We've
come a long ways from the days of the Rebel Rouser and early
Murphy newsletters.

Now I'm away for a few days, so everybody can get back to talking

Yeah, might still do that, but am hoping that this will get resolved. I have
been on this list with my Shaw account for many, many years, and only had
this problem recently. I don't think we are going to get Shaw to change
anything. That would be like asking your favourite software company
(Microslop and Windoze) to make a change to Outlook just for us. Ain't gonna
happen.

So are you going to wait until the snow flies before you come and pick up
your floats?

Hi Walter !

One thing that would REALLY help is if you could get your own
login to Wildcat - (you could use Bigfoot ;-) ) I think this is easy
to
do, and then your messages to the list would have YOUR login in the
header instead of the generic 'Rebel' - making them easier to pick out.

Thanks !
