flush fuel caps ?
flush fuel caps ?
I just looked thru the archives and found one mention (Rick and Wendy Harper)
of installing flush mounted fuel fill caps. Although I've never noticed fuel
caps on a Rebel, I just wonder if any of you have something different, and if
so, what did you use. I guess I must admit I was just a little taken aback
at the look of the stock ones, but like I said, I've never even noticed them
on a completed plane.

G'day Ben !
A friend here in OZ is what we cal a "Reg 35 Engineer" .... he can
DESIGN & stress calculate structures (and aircraft) even before they
start building them ...
(This guy , by the way, is the one who put me onto the REBEL in the
first place !!!)
Anyway, ... I was in the process of figuring out what I could do to get
the best possible cruise speed from the Rebel... and Steve (the
engineer) says "reducing drag is a far more efficient way to optimise
speed ..... just look at those fuel caps .... they would be robbing you
of a 1/2 a knot in cruise speed at leats" ......
THAT'S why I made the flush mounted ones... (I had some scrap aluminium
bar stock sitting around that would suffice to make the screw in cap and
the female "body" ... they work very well
I also made a tailwheel shroud (wheel pant) - and our 0-235 Rebel DID do
120 KNOTS flat out ! - (before the shroud died) ... but it was too
lightly constructed and the long grass
"redesigned it " :o(
It's on the short list for redoing in the near future ... along with
some intersection fairings & nice moulded covers over the brake calipers
etc ...

workshop! Hi Rick :^)
Ben, we looked at the standard caps and had the same thought so we went with
a flush cap from the ACS catalog, made by "Usher" It is contoured to fit
the curve of the tank skin. The only real down side is we will have to be
careful to make sure no water sets in the area above the O-ring when we open
the cap.

Also keep in mind Ben if you plan to go to floats that filler neck sticking
out of the wing skin will keep you from ending up in the lake on numerous
occassions!! )

I'm with Wayne !! That little neck has saved me from a nasty fall
several times ! Also, FWIW, every flush cap I've ever flown with
leaked a bit of water into the tank on rainy days, and some were
real pains to open, especially in the snow - Andair makes a nice one,
and I think they are available from MAM ... Personally, I wouldn't
bother - there are better areas to reduce drag, but -
"JUST GET IT FLYING - you can tinker later !! ;-) :-) :-) "
If you're really concerned about drag, you could make a tear-drop
fairing behind the neck, out of foam, and glass it, if you really want
to be fancy. I think Steve Sloan did that on his beautiful Rebel -
you should ask him to re-post the photos of all the streamlining things
he did on his. .... It really paid off for him in terms of improved
cruise - all the gear fairings, strut fairings, aileron push-rod covers,
aileron gap seals, and, IIRC, a tailwheel fairing !! I think he was
getting about 125-130 mph cruise with a 120 hp engine !!!
Keep building - it will all be worth it !! :-)
