tank skin question

Post by bransom » Sat Feb 18, 2012 9:26 am

Coupla actual building questions:
1. This is a minor point but I'll ask anyway: On the top tank skin, the
newer MAM shows the rear two rows of rivets tying into the main skin as
something like 13 per rib bay in each row. The older MAM calls for 7
rivets/bay in the first row (edge of underlying main skin) and then 13 in the
second row. Any opinions? BTW, Wray's penciled in X section sketch of this
construction area is a very nice touch.

2. I can't remember where I saw the Murphy recommendation to use a different
rivet than standard kit -- float rivets I recall -- for the top tank skin.
Can anyone please remind me where that recommendation is? Also, is it
considered reasonable in new kits these days to use these rivets for the
whole tank?

About ready to trim tank section out of wing skins -- hoping to not screw up.

tank skin question

Post by Wayne G. O'Shea » Sat Feb 18, 2012 9:27 am

Ben, for the sake of 18 or so rivets per wing go with the matching rows of
rivets. Stronger this way.

As for use of rivets I would have thought by kit #496 the tank section would
have been supplied with RR6402's and probably a few RR6403's at the spar to
complete it. You will want to use these in the entire tank to save some
grief...even though guys like myself are flying around with tanks
constructed using RV1410's with success. The 6402's just make much more
sense but make sure you pull them slow with minimal air pressure...otherwise
they can crack open defeating the purpose.

If your kit was pre-tank rivet and don't have these rivets and need to
aquire....please contact me for purchase instead of paying list price for
them. I have a box of 12000+ I bought from a guy that built his floats using
solid rivets.

Wayne

Thanks -- will go with full rows

My mistake --- yes, my kit references the RR64xx rivets for the tank. I had
wondered if what I had read somewhere(?) on this subject was referring to
something different from RV or RR, or in any case, get clarification so as to
be able to order ahead of when I need them.

Thanks again Wayne!
