1800 amphib plumbing?
hi,
clint and i are about half way through installing our amphibs, kit
built, on our christavia mk-1. he has cycled the gear a lot on each
float, but never both floats at one time. the question for tonight, and
i am sure there will be more, is "does anyone have a problem with
having to wait for the resevoir to provide, or accept fluid due to the
fact that the lines to the resevoir are smaller than the lines to the
pump, floats, and the selector valve?" when clint tested the single
float operations, he felt a resistance/delay in the pump handle, and
heard a sucking sound on the up/down stroke. we waited almost 15 months
for our resevoir and therefore clint tested with a homemade unit
constructed from a one quart can. there was no vent in the cap on the
can, but the lid was not screwed down tightly.
has anyone had problems with fluid flow delays?
has anyone flown with a resevoir with fittings and lines smaller than
the primary hydralic lines?
how many psi does the hand pump produce?
our selector valve, like a bunch of our stuff, does not match the
directions. does cyl1 or cyl2 move the wheels up? down?

No problems with fluid delays in mine. I used what MAM sent for
the reservoir and lines. The outlet in the bottom of the
reservoir was a little smaller, and I had to be careful when
securing it to the hose. However, it all works, for over 200
hours now. As for the selector set-up, I just followed the
instructions again, and they worked. It's been a few years now,
so can't remember exactly how they hooked up, but again, didn't
have any trouble with that.
One thing to watch out for, is that you have at least 300 PSI
rubber hoses. Bruce G. can tell you what happens if you don't.

Yes, do check to make sure MAM sent the correct hydraulic line and not fuel
line in its place. Someone in the shipping department grabbed the wrong hose
and I, not knowing any better, installed it.
I did notice it was fuel line at the time but being hand pumped I assumed
everything was low pressure and this is what MAM was using.
Well, about 60 hours later far away in a remote mountain lake (Fire Lake) in
BC the fuel line exploded from thermal expansion but fortunately we were able
to field repair it.
I called MAM when I got home and they shipped new hydraulic line the next
day. I replaced it in a few hours.

want 1/4 inch id tubes. the rest want 3/8 id tubes. the supplied 3/8 is
rated at 300psi. the supplied 1/4 is not rated. we hope the lines to
the resevoir. i.e. the 1/4 id lines are low preasure, and therefore do
not require anything more than fuel line or what mam provided.
any thoughts on this assumtion?

use fuel line for those lines only. I can easily move the pump handle

I followed MAM's instruction and had no problems. I believe everything going
to or from the reservoir is low pressure and every thing else is high
pressure.
My reservoir has 1/4" fittings too but I don't have a problem pumping the
gear. It's more like stroking because you can pump faster than the fluid can
return or the air can escape from the vent in the reservoir.
