Hi Guys,
I considering using a borrowed 4 blade Warp Drive for my 0320 on wheels but
when installed with out the nose bowl I can see that the outer nuts holding
the blades into the hub are only a 1/4" from the the starter. That seem too
close to me, when you consider that the nose bowl must fit perfectly in
between with no room to spare for any vibration. Anyone else notice this?
Would the 3 blade hub be smaller in diameter. Thanks.

Hi Clay, I sorta got the pic, so it sounds to me like you'll have to move that part of the baffeling from the nosebowl to the engine.
I guess Im still confused where the 1/4 spacing is, as the engine prop and starter all move as 1 unit, but if i do understand correctly, there is inlet or somthing like that protruding back form the inside of the nosebowl. That being the case, then cut out the offending piece on the nose bowl and move it via vlexible baffeling to the engine.
Of course that brings up the 5 most overused and understated words in aviation.
ALL YOU GOTTA DO IS!!!!!! Good luck and keep us posted. Curt N97MR
On another note, even though I'm still running my 3 blade warp, with harmonic dampner, The 3 blade is not recomended by the factory so I guess I wouldn't even go through the hassels of that research. Curt

Hi Curt,
Thanks for your response. I'll try to be clearer ... I'm using a Magna
Flight starter with a forward bushing which makes it stick out forward
beyond the ring gear (just like most common starters). Therefore I will need
to put a 'bump'on my nose bowl. When I install the 4-blade hub the outer
inside fiber nuts that hold the blades into the hub (ther are 4 bolts and 4
nuts for each blade) is very close to the forward end of the starter. This
can't be changed. I guess I could install a 1/2 " prop extension (spacer)
but I have spoken with one other guy who had my set-up ( 0320, old style
starter and no spacer) and he didn't see the problem with his 3-blade.
That's why I was thinking that maybe the 3 blade hub is smaller in diameter
than the 4 blade. I was just hoping to use this prop for awhile until I
figure out which float prop to buy.

Hi Clay
My 3 blade prop only has 2 bolts per blade so it's very possible they are
a different diameter. My nosebowl is off a Tri-pacer and it just had a hole
for the end of the starter to poke out through. If you did that you'd have
clearance to test things out.

Thanks Drew for the info. I spoke with Warp Drive today and found out that
in fact the 4 blade hub is larger in diameter than the 3 blade hub by about
1 1/4' radius. This explains a lot. Apparently Warp Drive is now
recommending the 4 blade for the larger Lyco engine. A guy flying a Subaru
powered rebel told me that the 4 blade didn't perform well on floats so he
got a wooden Collin Walker(spelling?) and loves it.

There are three different hub thicknesses available, 2", 2.5" and 2.75".
I believe you should be using the 2.75" thick hub for your 0-320. Is it
possible that you've got one of the smaller hubs?

Hi Clay !

That wasn't Rick from Musgrave Harbour, with the Subaru, was it ???
That 4 blade had a LOT of drag when gliding ....

There are more Rebels lately going to the Prince prop - it's a wood core
with carbon-fiber covering & protective edge for floats. The big attractions
are that it only weighs about 9 pounds (!!!) and it 'sort-of' changes pitch
in flight - gives about 100 fpm more climb than a Sensenich, at over 20 lb.
less weight. Their diameter & pitch numbers seem strange after regular
props, but apparently they work very well. ( 68 x 35 ??? - can't remember)

Prince props are available through Murphy Aircraft, at your usual
Rebel Builders discounted price (approx. $600 LESS than a Sensenich !!).

It's good to here from you. Yeah, that was Rick I borrowed the prop from.
He's still flying behind his Subaru and loving it!
I was hoping to use his prop just for awhile until I could make up my mind
on which prop to buy. I did receive some info on the Prince prop last year
and I have to admit that I'm tempted. Light weight (no dampener needed for
high HP), apparently 1 prop will work for float and wheel operation due to
flexing design and great performance according to at least one of our rebel
builders (was it Dale ? ...). It's interesting to hear from you that lately
more Rebels are going to the Prince prop. Maybe I'll call Murphy and Prince
Prop tomorrow and ask some questions.
Hope your having a good summer ... it's way too hot out here!

Hi Clay,
Ok I get the pic. I guess if the crank is moving enough to take up that
space I'd be more worried about the engine than the prop! The pull of the prop
is only going to take it further away, but if I was still concerned, I'd
just drop Warp drive an E-mail and I'm sure they'll help you with your problem.

Hi Clay !

Sounds like you'll have to use a spacer with the W-D prop - usually,
they are in the 1.5 - 2" thickness range. If you find one like that, it won't
hurt to use it - some folks believe the prop works better if farther away
from the cowling....

Overall, though, the Prince sounds like a better bet.

We've hardly had summer here - spring was cold & wet, with several
floods - and now fall is coming !! :-( REALLY enjoyed a couple of HOT
days at Oshkosh, though - mid 80's with a breeze - THAT felt GOOD !!!

Sounds like you'll have to use a spacer with the W-D prop - usually,
they are in the 1.5 - 2" thickness range. If you find one like that, it
won't
hurt to use it - some folks believe the prop works better if farther away
from the cowling....

Overall, though, the Prince sounds like a better bet.

We've hardly had summer here - spring was cold & wet, with several
floods - and now fall is coming !! :-( REALLY enjoyed a couple of HOT
days at Oshkosh, though - mid 80's with a breeze - THAT felt GOOD !!!

Clay:

I had used the 4-blade on my Subaru( 160HP) Rebel and found that it was
really just to much prop. It would jump off land and accelerate like a
sports car but top end speed was slow and the prop really acted as a break.

It was quite easy to feel both acceleration and deceleration surges just by
playing with the throttle. I used the same Warp drive blades and just
changed the hub to a 3 blade hub, and am quite happy with the prop.

I have only flown a little bit on floats yet but don't really think I will
even have to adjust the pitch to go from ski's/wheels to floats.

My 3 blade prop only has 2 bolts per blade so it's very possible they
are a different diameter. My nosebowl is off a Tri-pacer and it just
had

for the end of the starter to poke out through. If you did that you'd
have clearance to test things out.

I should have also mentioned/reminded that you wouldn't need to buy a whole
new prop from Warp just buy the 3 blade hub for a couple of hundred dollars,
and use the existing blades.

I noticed that I wrote break which should have been "brake" and the surges
that I was referring to were airborne and really quite evident.

Hi Del,
I don't think that I'm going to fly with the 4 blade now that I hear about
this "braking" effect that everyone is talking about and I'm still nervous
about using the 3 blade on my 0320. I'll just use the 4 blade for ground
start up and testing ... I guess I'm just going to have to make a decision
sooner than later on type of prop to buy.
