Moose Cable Tension / Nicos

Post by Don Boardman » Sat Feb 18, 2012 9:12 am

Hi All,

Randy and I are squeezing nicos. Any feeling for the cable tensions we
should be looking for with the1/8" rudder and elevator cables?

Note: We found the FAA's recommendation is not to use the bare copper nicos
MAM supplied with the SS cable. The Zinc plated cooper nicos are recommended
for the SS cable to prevent electrolysis of the dissimilar metals.

Regards
Don B.

Have no experience yet with SR/Moose rigging so can't help there.

Yes you are supposed to use the plated nico's with Stainless steel
wires......however...haven't seen any issues to date with the bare copper
ones on stainless..even on the float cross wires where they get a good dose
of water/dirt/etc. The plated "28" version are not very much more $ (less
than 10%), so really makes no sence not to supply the correct ones, but the
way it has been from day one!

Don,

Squirt the nico/SS cable now and then with Corrosion X, or similar, to arrest
the dissimilar metal corrosion and I think you will be fine. Or buy new
nico's. If you're on water you should be greasing everything all the time
anyway...so says every thing I read. If you are still flying it 20 years from now and
never did a thing I might be concerned.

Thanks Bruce, we did use the Zinc plated nicos. My partner is ten years my
junior and he might go 30+ years.
