Subject: Spring is definitely here!

Wasn't going to type this, but feel I have to at this time......my busiest
time of the year!

I know that it's officially spring when....... I come home from the
plastics
plant, or from dropping my daughter at high school, to find 7 or 8
messages
before 9am on the machine.... asking me to call you back! This has been
going on for the past couple weeks and I thought I should post something
here to put a stop to it, so my ill wife can actually sleep in mornings...
after she has final settled into a good sleep around 7am (when the snoring
bugger beside her has vacated the bedroom!). Those that have done so are
already up to speed on this, but I thought I would give the answering
machine a new lease on life and cut off the next batch of calls before
they
happen.

I don't want to appear rude, BUT I'm not going to go back to the days of
$850/month phone bills that I had back in the late 90's ....before the
dscol
site took off. I will not return these calls to give out free advise, at
my
phone expense....not to mention the lost time in the shop. If you do by
chance catch me answering the phone, you are still stealing my shop time!
Last time I called Pierre back at work it cost me $46 (I'm not complaining
Pierre, we had stuff to work out!), but you take that amount x even 5
calls
per week and it don't take long to negate anything I make around here!! I
feel that I am more than generous..... spending countless hours at night,
during my lunch/breakfast/etc.... sending out advise and pictures without
hesitation ....AND I DIDN'T SELL YOU WHAT YOU'RE WORKING ON!! If you
really
do want to buy something then say so when you leave the message. "Hi it's
John Doe...I want to buy your Rebel on Amphibs"...I >WILL< call you back!

What I really should be doing is getting right off of here (and using the
time to finish the house or something!) and keeping my "secrets" to
myself...... like all the other people in the business do....and the
standard reply should be "bring it by the shop and leave it for a
month....pay the bill and you can have it back".... but that's not the way
my parents brought me up!

A quick example of what others do for advise and consultation is Galen
Govier's fees for decoding 60's/70's MOPAR muscle car tags/buildsheets.
Phone consultation starts with taking your credit card # and you're billed
at $100US/hr ($25 min)...and YOU make the phone call. Emailed answers are
$25US per 10 SIMPLE questions. I could do this one as well...as I have
been
playing with MOPARS since I was born and can decode a car as quick as
anyone.....just not something I need to be doing to make enough money off
of
so that I can travel the world attending every car auction! (wait maybe I
should get into this service..NOT!)

I always joked with my wife during the high phone bill years about getting
a
1-900 #...so please don't make me do it now! Wouldn't be hard as I can
already take VISA!

I am here, as I have been for years, for free advise via >THIS<
medium...at
least until my arthritis gets so bad I can't continue to type at the speed
I
do, so lets keep it fair guys.

Cheers,
Wayne O'Shea

Jean Poirier

Spring is definitely here!

Post by Jean Poirier » Sat Feb 18, 2012 9:12 am

Hello Wayne,

I am "connected" to de dcsol since last october. I have talked to some
others builders since last year. Everyone, including me, thinks it is hard
to beleived how you and some others very experienced builders are generous
with their "know how" and experience. It is normal that you put some
limits! I do understand peoples requiring your time, it is not always easy
for first time builder and some time mam are long to aswer, but I prefer
that people do not exxagerate so you still "on line" at dcsol. To all of
those (particulary Mike Davis) who make dcsol alive... builders like me
really appreciate. Enough "violin" for this morning, I have to go work
too!

Rick Harper

Spring is definitely here!

Post by Rick Harper » Sat Feb 18, 2012 9:12 am

G'day Wayne !

I was always wondering HOW the hell you found the time to answer 500
questions a day - via e-mail (& I guessed your phone would run pretty
hot as well) .... with all us builders ... (and "others") ! :o)

Having run my own Luthery & repair shop (in the past), for many years, I
fully understand where you're coming from !

I always thought it amazing that it never occurred to all these people,
that "their little conversation" with you would eat into your time /
ability to earn your living .... or the fact that you might actually
have OTHER customers as well !!!!! :o) :o) :o)

I have friends who sleep by day & WORK at night ... just to minimise the
interruptions.

And we only have 20,000,000 people here to boot ! ... compared to the
U.S. & Canada that you deal with ... ouch !

Just like to say THANKS on behalf of myself & the other "down under"
types as well, for all your advice !!!
