Elite wheel / tire upgrade serial 611E

Post by Ralph Baker » Sat Feb 18, 2012 9:09 am

This was received in response to a query to Brian questioning the fact
that our tailwheel pivot is not vertical. The worry is poor ground
handling and shimmy. The pivot axis is inclined about 10 degrees with
the top aft of the bottom. The mains are the MAM "Tundra" option 8:00 x
6 and the tailwheel is upsized as well to what I believe is the Super
Rebel tailwheel. This is to alert all you other tailwheelers that you
may have another (this) built in problem. I believe this would have
occurred with the standard wheels as well. We have our tailspring in
the 2nd hole from the bottom, not second from the top as the manual
calls for. There is not sufficient "meat" in the attachment to move the
attachment further to the bottom of the forward tailspring attach
bracket.

Hi Ralph,

This is a problem on both the Elite and Moose, made worse when a larger
tailwheel is used.

I think the manual used to tell you to put the bend in the stinger, if
there was one, to the top. It should go to the bottom, which might help.

A very slight bend can be introduced to the stinger with no heat
treating. However, there may be no alternative to bending the stinger
and heat treating it.

Regards

Good morning,

We purchased the 8:00 x 6 mains and larger tail wheel (SR2500?) assembly
for the Elite. They are installed and I am concerned that the tailwheel
steering plane of rotation is not parallel to the ground with the
tailwheel spring in the second hole from the bottom in the forward
attachment. Another way to describe this would be that the axis of
rotation of tailwheel steering is not vertical, it is more forward at
the bottom (wheel) end of the assembly. The bottom hole in the fuselage
forward attachment would slightly improve, but not eliminate, the angle
and there is not much "meat" from the bottom hole to eliminate tearout
on a hard tailwheel strike.

Is this a concern for ground handling and shimmy on landing / takeoff?
Any ideas on correcting the pivot axis to vertical if it is a problem?

Thanks,

Ralph Baker

PS Please say a "welcome back" to Elaine for me. She is a real asset to
Mam.
