Close Tolerance Bolts

Post by Don Boardman » Sat Feb 18, 2012 9:09 am

Maybe someone has already mentioned this but along the line that AN bolts
are "a bit" undersized; along with reaming there are also the AN17 series
"close tolerance" bolts that are a few thousandths bigger in each size. I am
about to order a few 1/4 in. AN174 bolts from Aircraft Spruce.....
Jim
Jim, to clarify, I think that close tolerance bolts get you to the nominal
size, i.e. 1/4 is actually 1/4 not the usual undersized, but I don't think
they are over the .25 dimension.

I think this is correct,
Don B

Don,
You are indeed (almost) correct. They do not get you "oversize"; in fact
they are still less than the "stated" dimension. At least that has been my
experience so far. I can't remember the actual stats but I can measure a few
when the new ones arrive. My point is they are larger than standard hardware
and can help out in a "loose" situation.
