Seat Foam
Seat Foam
Has anyone used Oregon Aero for seat foam. I have spoke with them and they
advise they have the seat frame for the Moose and will supply the foam "ready
for upolstory" for $250/seat or complete upolstered seats using cloth for
$650/seat. I am interested how they are for comfort. They use different densities
and are known for being experts in this field.

cheap. I got cheaply made seats.
IMO buy the Oregon Aero.

Seat Foam
I think it is safe to say that there is nothing better than the
temperature sensitive, impact absorbing seat foams such as the Confor
foam listed in the Spruce catalog. Used to be called Temper foam or
sometimes astronaut foam. For those prices, I would think that must be
what Oregon is using... I used an inch of low density and 2" of medium
density as I'm a little under average body weight and in a cool climate.
1" each of low, medium, and high density confor foam is often
recommended for average body weight but the vendor that I dealt with
also wanted an idea of what the temperatures were like where I lived. It
laminated fine with contact cement and I built up the forward thigh
support with another 2" wedge to suit my leg length and the Rebel seat
geometry. Wish my car seat had a layer of this stuff on it!.
I prefer an Obus Form back support instead of foam on the seat back. Its
curvature also lets my butt sit farther back in the seat and results in
a little more thigh support. Ideally I would have liked my seat frames
to be a bit longer (front to rear) but the Obus Form effectively added a
few inches. (and that has to be a good thing ;) )

Haven't used Oregon, but have used Tempur/Comfor Foam, as they do,
and it is GREAT !! Sounds like a big jump for completely upholstered seats -
do they include the frame for that price ?? Otherwise, the Murphy leather
seats sound like a better deal - and they include the (regular) foam...
No question, at least a couple of inches of Comfor foam on top layer
will make longer flights MUCH more enjoyable ! You could likely slip
a sheet into the Murphy package, at least onto the seat bottom section ...
The seat cushions on the factory Moose were at least 6" thick,
maybe 8", and most of us also used an additional cushion when flying it.
It's nice to be up high for visibility ! :-) For the Rebel seats,
builders should try for at least 8" - 10" - it's better for visibility,
and you clear the seat belt attach bracket when getting in and out, so
your voice doesn't go up a couple of octaves ! ;-) :-)
I had my seats done with Naugahyde backs & edges for good wearing,
and cloth centers, for cooling. (Those Nauga's don't breathe well ! ;-) )
Also, add an elastic-topped Naugahyde pocket on the back, for maps, etc.
The factory leather worked very well, even in warm weather, and stood
up to wear very well.

Murphy informed me, after I ordered seat covers, that to get them through US
customs, I have to give US Customs a US Tax ID or my SSN. Has anyone gone
up against this or am I the test case? With all the hoopla about theft
identity I'm at odds with this policy or rule.

I am in Canada and we ship to the US, we have been routinely been having to go
through this, the couriers demand it and I suppose the State Department or IRS
or one of those are demanding it of the couriers. I don't think there is a way
around it.

I went through this a couple months ago. The shipment was held up for several
weeks before I called MAM to inquire. They called Customs. That's when we
learned they needed the tax ID number before they would allow the shipment to
proceed.

Seat foam
We purchased "Confor Foam" (can't use the TemperFoam name anymore) from
Jim Fixx of Fixx Props at Sun & Fun in 3 - 1" thick sheets of different
densities for the seat bottoms and 2 - 1" sheets of different densities
for the backs. The densities were based on Jim Fixx recommendations.
The seats were then upholstered in leather by Dove aviation of
Hartsville, SC (USA). They did a great job and we have about US$900 in
both seats total. Oregon Aero does a beautiful job but at top level
prices.
