Moose Tail Mods - vertical stabilizer fairing

Post by Michael Bleau » Sat Feb 18, 2012 8:52 am

I seem to recall that someone was producing a vertical stabilizer fairing
for the moose that had increased surface area "increased dorsal fin area"
would this be enough so that the ventral fin and finlets would be
unnecessary.

Is the yaw just on floats or on wheels too? Thanks, Brad

Moose Tail Mods - vertical stabilizer fairing

Post by Scott & Leere Aldrich » Sat Feb 18, 2012 8:52 am

It was Ryan Mowat that had the larger fin fairings. He said on floats their
airplane flew "ugly" with only the larger fin but that all was well after
adding the ventral and the stab tip winglets.

If it is I sure wouldn't want it for tail wheel work in a stiff cross wind!
Ever play on a nasty day with a Stinson... with that oversized tail fin??

Moose Tail Mods - vertical stabilizer fairing

Post by George Coy » Sat Feb 18, 2012 8:52 am

Wayne,
Worse than that is a Seabee without a locking tail wheel! I have owned both
Stinsons and SeeBees. The only thing I would point out is that the Rebel has
good brakes as well as a wider gear stance which will give better ground
handling than either of the above designs. I used to have great fun
explaining to students about directional stability in the Stinson. The
Stinson was an airplane that you could step on the rudder, release it and
the airplane would fly sideways. The ball would not return to center unless
you put in some rudder control. It was great for demonstrating neutral yaw
stability.
George
