All,
While we are awaiting our rebel kit we are trying to "tool up". We have our
bench built and are getting ready to put in an order at Aircraft Spruce for
some tools. Some questions:
1. Does anyone have specific Aircraft spruce part numbers for:
a. Pneumatic riviter w/die sets?
b. Dimple tools
c. Bucking bars.
2. Amount of clecos to order (all 3 sizes)!
AS&S is way cheaper than other places I found but I want to make sure I
order the right tools so we can START! Being brand new to Metal airplanes
makes looking through the catalog pretty confusing. If there is anymore
last chance advise PLEASE feel free to vent it out!

Hi Ryan:
If you are building a standard Rebel, there will be no need for a rivet set,
dies and bucking bars. I don't know if this is a tool requirement on the
Rebel Elite and Super Rebel.
Nonetheless, I bought a complete set from ATS for about $200. Included gun,
dies, bars, regulator, springs, etc. and a carry case. I have used it
twice, and that was on my Cub.
www.aircraft-tool.com
You can get a complete set of the best stainless dimple dies and squeezer
from
www.airbolt.com
I have 350-400 ea. 3/32" and 1/8" and about 50 3/16" full length, about 50
ea. 3/32", 1/8" and 3/16" short length, and 20 mid-reach spring clamps (a
must). I used most of the full length up at once on the wings, because I
built farther in clecos than the manual calls for. this is a good thing as
far as I'm concerned, because if you rivet when the manual tells you to, you
will find yourself removing rivets for one reason or another.
Hope that helps.

You could do a LOT worse than ordering the BASIC TOOL KIT from Murphy !!
They give you all the basic tools, and enough clecoes to get started...
including a set of dimple dies.
Otherwise, you may end up buying stuff you can't use - you DO NOT need
the type of rivetter that uses dies, NOR bucking bars !! The Rebel is built
with AVEX blind rivets - they are PULLED rivets, which you can drive by
yourself - you don't need someone to buck them.
BTW, have you checked USA Tools, or Cleaveland Tools ??

After ordering my kit in July 99, I interviewed some local Rebel builde=
esget some ideas on what tools and equipment were required. After all not=
inwere taken, I decided to make a simple "equipment needed" spread sheet =
r sayExcel to sort out the best prices available from the best supplier.
As progress continues on my bomber, I may find that I need more stuff o=
cameto myself..."dang, why did I buy that tool?".
Most of these tools are new, as my previous aircraft building project
required different type of assortment. Here is a list of major tools I=
tightup with for this project:

Clecos: 400@ 1/8
Clecos: 50@ 3/16
Clecos Side Clamp: 6 @ 1/2
Clecos Side Clamp: 6@ 1
90 degree Drill (Tight Fit kit)
Digital Level 24" (SmartTool)
Rivet Spacer

Basic hand tools etc.
When I was building my Long-EZ, I did commerce almost exclusively with
Aircraft Spruce. Nowadays with the business competition environment and=

New Builder questions
Joel:
Do you drop the calipers because you are holding them with one hand and
scratching your head with the other while trying to determine which teeny
line
the tiny pointer is pointing to? =:-)
We could probably start a pretty good dialogue if I said something like
"analog gages in the cockpit are best ...and discrete discontinuous digital
data displays everywhere else". But then I would be hypocritical, because I
have several (not flight critical) digital gages in my Long-EZ instrument
panel .... a clock, stereo and OAT readout.

It is an experiment just getting started and is not meant to replace this
forum. Don't know if it will survive or not. Just playing around with MSN
Communities. For now the emphasis is on posting photos and adding a little
dialog. All are welcome to join. I have a bunch of Elite phots yet to post
that may be of interest to the group.

are great for relative measurements and in/mm conversions, but I have a
habit of laying them somewhere and forgetting about them until I move
something and hear the clink clink sound as they hit the floor. Then I
think 'sure am glad that wasn't a $100 digital' ;>)

New Builder questions
Nice format! I like the fact that you can add pictures with descriptions...
you're likely to get a much bigger photo library when anyone can add a photo
themselves. I wish I knew how to develop the dynamic features like that...
I'll put a link to your site up on my Rebel site soon.
