Stol Kit

Post by David W.S. King » Sat Feb 18, 2012 12:04 am

Hi

A friend of mine is in the process of putting a "AM" stol kit on his
Rebel
and a couple of us went to have a look at it. We were comparing the
kit
to a different brand leading edge kit and we noticed that his leading
edge ribs are quite a bit different in that the bottom edge is flat
while the other kit forms a definite curve back into the bottom of the
airfoil.

We noticed there was quite a gap along the bottom between the rib and
the stock leading edge skin 3/8"+. If you push the rib up into place
it did form the same as the certified kit. We were talking about it
and were wondering if he got a bad set of ribs or if this is how its
suppoesed to be. We did try one rib on another Rebel and it was
differant
in how it fit that wing.

Anyone have an idea how these should look when installed ie if this is
normal or a bit out? One of the comments that started this whole line
of questions was that with the flat line along the bottom it couldn't
work
as well as the curved bottom on a leading edge.

Dave

"AM" -> Angus Mckenzie/Baron stol kit.

Dave
I know absolutely nothing about an "AM" stol kit but from your
description it kinda sounds like this might be a little
like what they
are trying to achieve on the leading edge.

I'm sure if Angus can get his Camo's off and set his cross
bow down long
enough to do some typing..... he'll tell you what's the
scoop, but I can add
that his kit is rolled on the same mega dollar CNC slip
roll as a very
expensive after market cuff for a "furry" airplane with a
flat leather tail!
:o)

Wayne
"
Ahh that would be that "All Ones Got" place a few miles down
the road. Bet you didn't know the initials are what their pricing
policy is... ;-]

The metal was fine but the ribs really looked off. Was why we
were wondering if he got a bum set or not.

If you look at the newer airfoils such as the 23xxx series you will
notice that the most forward point of the wing leading edge is indeed
substantially lower than the 4415 Rebel wing. On some the leading edge
seems to curve down a bit. If memory serves this tends to gives more
curvature to the top of the wing, higher lift, and a gentler stall. The
trailing edge also tends to curve up a bit much like Rebel flaperons in
reflex.

I know absolutely nothing about an "AM" stol kit but from your
description it kinda sounds like this might be a little like what they
are trying to achieve on the leading edge. I believe Harry Riblett's
book "GA aerofoils" gives a good overview and I think he has some info
on the web as well.

Yes I have seen some fair differences in the overall leading edge shape on
various Rebel's. This is due to (minimally) factory tolerances and mainly
due to the builder not pulling the skin in place fully before
drilling/riveting, causing a hump right below the forward spar. This could
also be one of the "mystery" reasons that similar powered/equipped Rebels
have different cruise speeds!

Hi Dave !

I've never heard of anybody having problems with Angus's
STOL kits, but I'm sure he'd want to hear about this problem !
He's always been 'right there' to answer questions and help any
way he can ...

Any chance you could email him a photo of the rib fit ??
That would help a lot. It could be that, as Wayne says, just maybe
your friend's wing leading edge isn't quite perfect .... is it
a Rebel he built himself, or was the original builder elsewhere ??

Anyway, a picture will tell thousands of words !

Hi Alister !

Not on their sales staff - just passing on the word about
products i've used & like ! (You should hear me on some of the
things I <don't> like !!! ;-) - - no, I guess I can't talk
about those too much ... might upset a lot of listeners who've
bought them !)

Anyway, you can catch Dave Fife at:
(for Hoerner wing & tail tips, aileron pushrod fairings, etc.)

aircrafttips@yahoo.com

If you catch up to Dave, maybe you could ask him to please
post here the original performance improvement numbers that he & Curt
got from their test flying, as I've forgotten the exact numbers !

And Angus McKenzie at:
(for the STOL leading edge & wing fence kits)

"Angus McKenzie - McKenzie/STOL" <angus@lweb.net>

Both will be positive additions for performance & safety,
and now, with your (and our) improved dollar positions, not quite
as painful as they were last year !! ;-)
