Well, Wayne, that pretty much says it all. I'm sure we would all be over
willing to give Jesse any help he might ask for or need. Maybe more.

This is a good time to thank you, Wayne, for all the experience and
professionalism you have brought to and shared with all the builders on the list. Not
to diminish any other members contributions.

The main reason to build a homebuilt is because >YOU< want to and if you
just want to fly something then buy a flying airplane, as in a lot of cases
you can do so for less money than building one will cost you. For instance I
can buy about three ratty Luscombes for the cost of the parts to do a nice
150Hp Rebel, and I don't have to build any of them before I can fly them. As
for me seeming "to make a living" out of this..... in reality this is just a
hobby that got >>REALLY<< carried away ! I have another source of income
to keep the family fed and the kids in university. However I do, sometimes,
make a good dollar off what I do with these Murphy's, but this didn't happen
overnight and I'm pretty sure that I have built/repair/refurbished more
Rebel airframes than anyone outside the factory (and possibly inside as
well). This "experience" equates into me being able to sometimes sell for
more money than "private individuals" can that have built one, or are
selling something they bought second hand that has been plagued with leaking
fuel tanks, incorrect sloppy construction etc that they are trying to off
load.

In all seriousness, there are many more GREAT thoughts available on the
Murphy Builders list than just my personal schpeel. Here's the link to this
unofficial site with a few hundred guys/gals on board and always willing to
help out the new guy on the block.

As for flying amphibs, generally I would say to get full satisfaction out of
the airplane you are going to want 150HP for sure. However, if you kept it
bare bones light, no rear floor, no paint and just accent trim (a full GOOD
paint job adds 40 to 50lbs!) you could possibly get away with a 100HP x 912S
Rotax but remember you can't load it to 1730lb and expect it to climb. I
have no experience with Jabiru's but there are many on the builders list
from Oz that might just be able to shed some light here, as well as others
here in North America that have followed the engines development.

As for mods to do to the airframe, they have all been covered on the
builders list as well. Firewall plates, heavier door sills, float attach
point doublers, V-braces etc etc. The archives is also full of pictures as
well and you can spend a whole week looking through them!

If you just want something to fly and get in the air, then consider a second
hand machine whether it be a Rebel or something you can find that >might<
come close to the Rebels performance (there's not much). I have two Rebel
Amphibs up for sale right now and have attached their spec sheets for your
perusal. Prices are CANADIAN dollars. If you want some pictures just let me
know and I can forward them as well.
