What's everyone using out there for preheating? Its hard for me to get
115V.

I am looking at a Red Dragon or a generator and a tanus heater.

What are your thoughts.

No fan was required? The box that you built, did it need holes in the
side to provide a circulation for the warm air to flow into the cowl?

When I had my rebel tied down outside I used a " Mr. heater" It's a
radiant heater that screws onto a BBQ tank. I built a box around just
the heater part out of aluminum and 2 galvanized furnace pipes coming
out of the top. wrapped it all up in reflective bubble pack
insulation. Just light it up stick a tube in each cowl inlet throw a
blanket over the cowl and wait 20-30 min. and the cylinders would be
warm to touch. Now that I have a hangar I can just plug in an electric
heater. I even have it on a timer so if I know when I'm going to fly I
can have the plane ready.

Peter,
We are using the Reiff electric heaters with a heat band on each
cylinder and a hot pad epoxied to the oil sump for 300 watts total.
look on the Reiff website for details. The Reiff system leaves the
cylinder head wells open. I keep the system energized all the time as
we are under construction. We do have a 200 watt light bulb in series
to drop the voltage across the heaters so they are not full temp. For
power, consider a small Honda generator of 1000 watts. They are now 4
stroke and can be useful for battery charging, drill use, and camping as
well as preheating.

I just couldn't put a flame that close to gasoline for fear of a leak
and more subsequent preheating than desired. No facts as to hazard -
just personal feeling.

Peter:

I have a 3000 watt generator running a 1500 watt ceramic furnace( heater).
Put a couple of blankets over the cowling,wrap it with a tarp, close up the
bottom and heat . Time depends on how cold it is.

That's the one. I left the bottom of the box open to get a chimmeny
effect and I hung a peice of heavy screen down the centre to absorb some of
the heat. A fan would probably help it work a little faster but I never
felt the need to add one. I'll try to post a couple pictures later in the week.

There's a good thread going on www.supercubs.org right now about Tanis
Heaters and all the other options. Maybe stick you nose in there and have a
read.

I still just use my little 900watt car heater shoved up inside the lower
cowl lip and my Mom's patch work quilt (if she ever knew!!) over the
cowling. 3 or 4 hours on a -25*C day and oil temp is about 125*F at start
up!

Hi Peter--

Last Iditarod I spent a lot of time trying new ways to preheat through
the nights. The generator/Reiff system works great IF you can get the cold
generator started at -10F the next morning else you have to fill the fuel
tank every several hours during the night. The propane heaters worked OK to
a point, but still had problems working at extreme cold and you still need
power. White gas stoves like Northern Companion will start at any temp but
take several hours to really preheat and with the open flame you need to
monitor carefully.
The best solution I found was a very small Coleman catalytic heater (the
"SportCat" I believe) for US$15 at WalMart. When the one pound propane
bottle is screwed on, it's the size of a bread loaf and you can put it right
in your cowl once lit. It runs for 18 hrs, has no flame, and will keep a
currently heated engine warm all night after shutdown, or will bring a cold
engine up to about 40F if left 12hours. It produces about 1000 BTU so leave
some open space around the head to not melt anything, but needs no power,
lasts long time, and extra fuel bottles are easy to carry. Plus plane is
always ready to go whenever you are...

Hi Peter, I use a system by Reiff. It has bands that wrap the base of the cylinder instead of expensive dual purpose probes. It will piggy back to a pad heater that's already in place, such as an ezy heat. The tanis connectors are also below the cylinders and are often a pain after they have been exposed to the heat of the engine. The Reiff goes across the top of the case and only the pad stuff is on the bottom. If you wrap the cowl with blankets the Reiff is real close to being as fast with total heating, not just the surface. The big advantage of course for the Dragon is no generator Right? I think it works off 12v. I'll try and find info for the size generator you'll need to run a 4cyl w/pad system. I've got to order a band set for an A-36 beech tomorrow anyway. I think it's about the same as the tanis, if not a little cheaper. Curt N97MR
