Gullwing doors?

Post by Walter Klatt » Fri Feb 17, 2012 10:56 pm

When on floats, I stand on the front end of my strut
step support and hang on to the top sill of my door
with one hand when checking my fuel. I can fuel it that
way, too, without any ladder or other support. So not
sure if that would still work if they were gull wing
doors.

Brian Lawson

Gullwing doors?

Post by Brian Lawson » Fri Feb 17, 2012 10:56 pm

Hey Phil and Lisa,

I know that Curt (Rebel 426 N97MR<Rebflyer@aol.com>) has cabin doors
that are hinged at the top, and when opened they latch and lay flat
against the underside of the wings. His plane is an amphib, and he
says that this greatly facilitates getting in and out of the plane to
and from the floats during water work. I forget what he did with his
wing tank-drains.

Curt wrote earlier today that he was going to be U/S for a bit while
he has some medical work done, but I'm sure when he comes back he
would put forth at least the "pro" argument.

Take care. Happy Easter.

Brian Lawson,
Windsor, Ontario.

Thanks, I have you're page saved, but forget the wealth of info it holds. I
need to get a good look at the door mod for strut clearance. So I'll just put
the doors on hold for now. Thanks for the help.

Gullwing doors?

Post by Jones, Michael » Fri Feb 17, 2012 10:56 pm

Phil & Lisa

i am currently doing my doors gull wing with opening window, with outside
locking paddle latch (like cessna, sorry for the bad word)and internal hand
crank

will post picks in next few weeks, hopefully

at this point i would say its a hell of alot of design and fabrication work,
months and months of sketches and redesign, should be great when done
however

one problem however is you cant reach the inside door handle when door is in
the up position, need anther handle somewhere on the door, its almost done
but still few small details to work out, might put gas cylinder on it to
raise door as well

can bring door to next meeting at brampton if are close enough to get to
brampton, otherwise you will have to wait for the pics

regards

Mike#007

Thanks for the reply. I can't make Brampton, I live states. I also thought of
a gas cylinder. How is the clearance on the front bottom of the door to the
strut? It looks like it would have to be reshaped shorter in that area.

Rebflyer

Gullwing doors?

Post by Rebflyer » Fri Feb 17, 2012 10:56 pm

Hi Phil, the additional wedge you'll need in the front of the door is 11.5"
long and 2.5" high. That left me enough room for a 1/2" overlap of the door
skin to fusealage and the wedge takes so little of the door space you won't
even notice it when you get in and out. I have always been able to stand on
my step and check fuel without hanging on to anything, but my step is 2.5"
wide. I really cannot give any real arguments of gullwing vs std. doors as I
have only flown with the gullwings. I do think it would be nice to open a
window in flight, but the doors do float nicely when left open. I''ve never
flown with them in the open and latched position as I'm concerned that the
narrowing thickness of the door to wing distance may cause some fluttering or
losss of lift and the door is only about 3/4 away from the wing in the rear.
If I want to I can have the doors off in about 10 min. I also went to the low
profile sump drains and there is plenty of room between the door and sump
that way. My ventilation is from a couple of cessna style flap vents borrowed
from a 150. They work great.
All in all, the doors are great on floats. Easy access and its easy to
have the passenger hang onto the strut until the prop stops wihtout dodging
the door, but I'm not sure if that is even a real problem. Sooo keep at it,
it's worth it! Curt N97MR
