Third seat for Rebel/Elite

Post by Peter, Juliet, & Wanaao » Fri Feb 17, 2012 11:57 pm

I take it wayne you are giving our conversation a subject, third seat
or flaps.

My Rebel, 499R, was completed in 1998. It is fitted with a 0-320. It
comes with a set of penetration skis, which I have been told that the
wheels create drag and can grab.

I will know more once I get the Rebel in my garage this winter to
install the third seat and belt, intercom, horizon, MP3 player, flaps,
and finish off the interior.

I hope to get two months before the dead of winter arrives here in
Yellowknife in the Northwest Territories. Hopefully I'll have all the
garage work done by March in time for so ski flying.

Thats a good question Walter about the seat belts. I would think I will
have to build up the areas I will attach the belts. Brian at Murphy
suggest I go to a race shop and get them to make me up a 5 point
harness. He said not to tell them it is for an A/C.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions.

As for the extra seat, I've seen just a set of
cushions, back &
bottom, that match the front seats, placed on the
floor on the right side
of the baggage area. This has the passenger sitting sideways,
across the fuselage. As long as you have proper seat
belts, this
setup will give lots of head & leg room, while keeping the flap
mixer away from the action. The cushions can be secured with a
couple of strips of Velcro.

If you have any idea where to start looking for the aluminum seat let
me know.

Thanks,

Third seat for Rebel/Elite

Post by Walter Klatt » Fri Feb 17, 2012 11:58 pm

Thanks, Wayne. I can see the set-up you describe work for 2 rear
seats.

I was actually thinking of Bobp's suggestion earlier of just
velcroing some seat cushions (patio chair cushions?) to the floor
and right side, sitting sideways in the back with the feet
towards the left side. Perhaps the shoulder and forward lap belt
can use the same attach points as the right front seat. Then
maybe the rear lap belt for this 3rd seat could be attached to
the float point bulkhead similarly to what you have. Do you have
any pictures for that one by any chance?

average 140 pounder that you would be putting in the

attach to a triangular .125 plate that joins the floor

Thanks guys for all the info. I am on a steep learning curve right now.
In a couple of years I hope to have some of the knowledge you guys have.

My Rebel should be in Northern Ontario or Manitoba tonight. There is
some weather moving through that area over the next couple of days.

See if I can find a minute tomorrow to take a shot of the lap attachments.

For a sideways seat I would think, as I believe Brian G suggested to Peter,
a 5 point harness. This would keep you from sliding out of the seat in a
hard arrival. "Neuter" strap attached to floor, lap belt to rear door
bulkhead/side channel area and the rearward side probably the same spot as
my 4 seat set. Double shoulder straps with the fwd one probably the same
plate as the passenger shoulder strap and the rearward to the top area of
the float bulkhead.

Right on, Walter ! That's what I would do - just pick
up the existing points for the one seat.

The regs say you must have a seat belt for each occupant -
there's no specific mention of a "seat", so the cushions would work
fine ! Can't be too thick, in any case, because there's not
a lot of extra room back there ... ;-) :-)

It would be an out for the insurance company and a violation on your

after the fact, then I would at least make sure you amend your W & B

sample calculation of flying with this seat occupied.

Just throw a cover letter on it asking to "please add the attached W & B
amendment to C-G***'s file" and submit it to which ever TC office that
holds your file and then you are clean and free from being violated!!

When in doubt throw the ball in their court! I have found that they don't
have the time or manpower to do anything other than what you ask and
really
doubt anyone would come to inspect the installation!

Right on, Walter ! That's what I would do - just pick
up the existing points for the one seat.

The regs say you must have a seat belt for each occupant -
there's no specific mention of a "seat", so the cushions would work
fine ! Can't be too thick, in any case, because there's not
a lot of extra room back there ... ;-) :-)

Third seat for Rebel/Elite

Post by Bob Patterson » Fri Feb 17, 2012 11:58 pm

Hi Wayne !

You're absolutely right !! And don't forget to notify
your insurance company of the corrected number of seats, as
many cover "by the number of passenger seats" - that extra
convenience will cost you 'big time' !!! :-(

Walter

Thanks guys for all the info. I am on a steep learning curve right

In a couple of years I hope to have some of the knowledge you guys
have.

My Rebel should be in Northern Ontario or Manitoba tonight. There is
some weather moving through that area over the next couple of days.

You're definitely right about passenger coverage! It just never
