Flaperon Control Roof Hanger on Rebel
Flaperon Control Roof Hanger on Rebel
Walter,
If you are interested I can email you the pertinent section from the manual
on CD. It would be a WordPad document. Should also be able to open it in Word.
You might also want to look at this section of the Elite builder's manual
which is posted on MAM's website. It also uses back to back channels, no
mention of gussets, and uses an additional bracket to tie into the roof. FYI.

Flaperon Control Roof Hanger on Rebel
Recently, there was some discussion about how to do
this area in the Rebel. I still have the old original
setup where the hanger is attached to a single channel
running between the 2 bulkheads. So far, no problems
with mine, but I understand this is a weak point,
although have never seen MAM service bulletin on it.
However, I believe the new instructions have this
hanger sandwiched between 2 channels instead of one. Is
this correct?
Also, I have seen a mod where the hanger was sandwiched
between 2 roof ribs instead of just 2channels between
the bulkheads. Not sure if this is a MAM approved mod
or not.
Which is now the best or recommended method? I plan to
beef mine up in this area over the winter.

I just had a look at the Controls, Chapter 15, Page 24,
Figure 15.8.12 of the Elite manual on their website,
and could not see where they used 2 back to back
channels. What I looked at was the same as mine is
currently, with the hanger sandwiched between the
channel and the roof bracket. What am I missing here?

No, I just have the original single channel, too.
That's why I'm asking which is the best way to beef it
up. I have heard about the double back to back channel
and I have seen it done with the back to back roof
ribs. But as in my previous post, the Elite manual page
from the MAM website that I highlighted still shows the
single channel method.

Flaperon Control Roof Hanger on Rebel
Sorry Walter. My mistake. I was speaking 'from memory' and obviously had my
facts confused. My Rebel uses two back to back straight channels, separated
by the .125" hanger bracket, no roof bracket, but calls for gussets and 'L'
brackets that tie each channel end to the forward and aft bulkheads. I sent
you the file as requested.

Flaperon Control Roof Hanger on Rebel
Hi Walter,
I remember there was a beef up in this area and I believe it was an extra
channel put back to back with the existing one. I sounds like you already have
it. This is the one area I never beefed up and mine is only a single channel.
There is no MAM service bulletin for this only a manual change for more
recent kits.
I remember Wayne (I think) saying this was changed because someone left their
plane set outside without control locks installed and the wind beat and
slapped the controls until it ripped the hanger and bracket off the roof. Or
something to that effect.

Flaperon Control Roof Hanger on Rebel
Thanks, Roger, for the file with the new instructions
for the Rebel. That's very interesting. They show the
hanger sandwiched between 2 back to back channels as
you described, but no bracket attached to the roof.
Meanwhile the Elite instructions as below, still use
the original Rebel method with one channel and a roof
bracket which is what I currently have. I wonder if
there are new instructions for the Elite somewhere,
too.
So which is the better way to go? Or as I said
previously, I have seen it also done with 2 back to
back roof ribs. Maybe I should keep my roof bracket,
but just add a second channel.

for the Rebel. That's very interesting. They show the
hanger sandwiched between 2 back to back channels as

Meanwhile the Elite instructions as below, still use

Sorry Walter. My mistake. I was speaking
'from memory' and obviously had my
facts confused. My Rebel uses two back to
back straight channels, separated
by the .125" hanger bracket, no roof
bracket, but calls for gussets and 'L'
brackets that tie each channel end to the
forward and aft bulkheads. I sent
you the file as requested.

Flaperon Control Roof Hanger on Rebel
Picture SM545E5.BMP on the Murphy CD shows it sandwiched, but nothing about
this in the manual on the same CD. In fact, it rather looks like the hanger
may be sanwiched between two ST-31s without any bracket
By the way, Walter, thanks for info on the seats. I think there may be
significant differences in design between the Elite and Rebel in this area.
For sure, the sills are totally different. somebody alluded to some
assymetry between the left and right sides, but both are identical on the
Elite, other than for the aieron pushrod, of course.

Flaperon Control Roof Hanger on Rebel
If it helps clear up how to put the hanger on the roof don't follow the
pictures on the CD that Murphy sends as these are pic's from the prototype.
If anyone has the misfortune of having a very old Elite manual it shows two
for and aft channels made of st-31. the new book has the single st31 with
angle clips for and aft to tie it to the bulheads and a .032 bracket that
ties it to the roof and it works just fine. The control chapter is on
Murphy's web site for down load. Unless you have a problem leave it per the
book I have never seen a problem in this area that would require a beef up

pictures on the CD that Murphy sends as these are pic's from the prototype.

Flaperon Control Roof Hanger on Rebel
Yes, Wayne, I was expecting to hear from you on this
one, because I do remember the past discussions.
However, as mentioned there appears to be a few
different ways to beef up the area. Then what confuses
things further is to find the Elite controls manual on
the website still uses the original Rebel method with
the single channel and roof bracket.
So, if I'm going to do a fix, I'm just trying to find
out the best recommended method, manuals aside.
Thanks everyone for their input.
Walter

I've been staying quiet on this thread, as
we've been here before, but sorry
Sean the single ST-31 (.020) channel and
.032 bracket to the roof does not
"work just fine" for the torque tube hanger
bracket. You haven't looked too
hard....... if you haven't seen this area to
be a problem. I have fixed at
least 7 (possibly more) of these hanger
brackets, that buckle from leaving
aileron/flaperons without gust locks or even
just having a tail wind rip the
stick out of our hands.
At minimum this channel needs to be .032 and
not .020 and it's very easy to
add a layer of material to it by bending up
a channel to fit inside the
existing one if you are already built to
this stage or flying. Better now
than when you go to leave a distant flyin
and find things aren't where they
used to be on the cabin roof!
Cheers,
Wayne O'Shea

Walter,
-> So which is the better way to go?
FWIW Brian at MAM told me the two back to back channels, and gussets was much
better that the single channel and plate used on the Elite. He also told me
the gussets were not super critical, and were just there to stiffen the
assembly.

I am just approaching the step of installing the roof hanger, and was
thinking on doing the following: Two ST31s with the roof bracket and hanger
sandwiched between them, plus use the tail end of one FUS-65 (I only used
one in the centre in the third bay. Instructions not too clear about this),
cut the lower lip off it, and rivet it to one of the ST31s, so it will be
tied solidliy to the roof skin. Mind you, the roof skin itself is pretty
flimsy in this area. Maybe what's needed is a doubler on the roof also.
Comments? How did you guys beef yours up?

windJust thought I would add my 2c worth here, I agree with Wayne on this, I
have repaired mine twice in this hangar bracket area due to inadvertent
notgusts.
With the aircraft out of the air at the moment I will be taking the
opportunity to strengthen the area.

sorryI've been staying quiet on this thread, as we've been here before, butSean the single ST-31 (.020) channel and .032 bracket to the roof does
attoo"work just fine" for the torque tube hanger bracket. You haven't lookedhard....... if you haven't seen this area to be a problem. I have fixed
leavingleast 7 (possibly more) of these hanger brackets, that buckle from
nowtheaileron/flaperons without gust locks or even just having a tail wind riptostick out of our hands.
At minimum this channel needs to be .032 and not .020 and it's very easyadd a layer of material to it by bending up a channel to fit inside the
existing one if you are already built to this stage or flying. Better
thetheythan when you go to leave a distant flyin and find things aren't whereused to be on the cabin roof!

If it helps clear up how to put the hanger on the roof don't follow
showsprototype.pictures on the CD that Murphy sends as these are pic's from theIf anyone has the misfortune of having a very old Elite manual it
perwithtwofor and aft channels made of st-31. the new book has the single st31thatangle clips for and aft to tie it to the bulheads and a .032 bracketties it to the roof and it works just fine. The control chapter is on
Murphy's web site for down load. Unless you have a problem leave it
beefthebook I have never seen a problem in this area that would require a

Flaperon Control Roof Hanger on Rebel
Hi Al !
Your thought sounds OK. As somebody who has had the
stick ripped out of my hand by a strong gust on the ground,
and the hangar bracket torn almost right off, ....
I think my sequence of parts would be : ST-28 (the thicker channel),
roof bracket & hanger, a roof rib, then another ST-28. The ST-28's are
fastened with tabs at both ends to the cross member. Although
the roof is thin, you would be bracing 2 ways, which might help
stiffen up the roof too ! ;-)
This might be overkill, but you'll only have to do it
once !! I'd leave both flanges on the rib section.
Just MHO .... :-)
