Capacitors

Post by Ralph Baker » Fri Feb 17, 2012 11:51 pm

The capacitors used in strobe applications may fail if energized at full
voltage after a period of inactivity (months). The newer ones are self
healing if the proper procedure is used. That involves energizing at
lower voltage and then stepping up over time. An example for 12 volt
nominal would be to energize at 1 1/2 volts for a few hours, then 3
volts, then 4 1/2 and so on up to 12 volts. Use batteries to avoid any
spikes. Sure beats replacing a strobe power supply.
