Rebel FUS-69 Bracket Attach

Post by rognal » Fri Feb 17, 2012 11:29 pm

Hi Terry,

I positioned, drilled, and bolted the brackets in place without ever having
the wing positioned against the fuselage. When I did fit the wings for the
first time, everything went right into place, right where it should be.
Believe me though, I made sure to measure twice, then measured again, and
again, etc., before cutting. I started the slot with a small drilled hole,
then gradually opened it to size with a file, checking the fit (and position)
of the bracket often. I slipped a scrap piece of flat .020 inside against the
bulkheads so the file teeth would not cut into them. Remember the float fix
doubler here, also.

I also drilled the fittings to Bulkhead F&G as explained by Drew in his email.
Very tight quarters!

Hope this helps.

Rebel FUS-69 Bracket Attach

Post by Drew Dalgleish » Fri Feb 17, 2012 11:29 pm

Hello Terry
I installed my rear wing attach brackets by measuring without any trouble.
I made up some kind of a wood jig to hold the bracket on the outside but I
can't remember exactly how it worked. I didn't updrill the brackets until I
had the wings jigged in place. This gives you a chance to make small
corrections if needed.
Years ago a builder complained in the rebel rouser that these brackets
couldn't be installed without a very compact right angle drill or removing
the roof skin. I was able to do it by removing bulkhead G, drilling through
the bracket into F, then clecoing G back into place with the bracket
clecoed to the F bulkhead. Next break off a short piece of an old #30 bit
and sharpen it to a point, then insert it through F and the bracket and
mark G for drilling by squeezing it with a pair of channel lock pliers. Use
a small block of wood to back up behind G. Mark a couple holes and remove
Bulkhead G and drill them out then remove the bracket and use it as a guide
to drill the rest of your holes. After that you can reassemble everything
and drill to #11.

I am at the point in the manual (Rebel Fuselage Chapter 12 Figure 12.26.4
and 12.26.7, Dated 29/06/98) where it has you get ("X" & "Y") dimensions
for the AFT attach brackets on the wings, then transfer those dimensions fo
r
correct placement of the FUS-69 Aft Wing Attach Brackets that will
eventually be sandwiched between Bulkhead F and G.

My question to you folks "that have been there, done that", is there any
reason why I should NOT accomplish this task now? Is measuring "X" and "Y"
then transferring the measurements the best method to get these brackets
mounted accurately? (How much room for error is there when laying out these
dimensions?)

OR . . .

is it best to wait until the wings are "semi-mated" to the fuselage, bolt
the brackets to the wing fittings then position, mate and drill to the
fuselage bulkheads?

I have searched the archives but I can
