Transponders

[Walter Klatt]

I have a transponder in my Rebel. I have been across
the border a couple of times and occasionally go into
Vancouver Airspace where you need it. Also, I have
noticed that my local airport in Langley now assigns
codes on take-off and sometimes when inbound. It is not
mandatory to have one at Langley, but wonder if that is
the way of the future. Nice thing about it, though, is
that they then warn other aircraft of your exact
location and altitude without you having to tell
everyone exactly where you are.

So for all it takes to install one, I think it is worth
having. Certainly easier to do it at build time than
later if you have to.

What if you have a removable one (slides out of the
tray)? Is your C of A still invalid if it is removed?
Or how about if you just put in a log book entry and
say it is not operable or out of service, whatever the
required lingo? Of course, the best route is to get it
certified, but just curious.

have it certifed every 24months
or your C of A is invalid. If, God forbid,
something happened and your
insurance company is looking for an out,
that's enough not to pay the claim!

If you fly into big airports requirring a transponder you will have to have
one. Personaly, I will avoid airports requirring a trans.I may request
special permission from time to time if that is an option but if I
frequented an airport requirring one to often I'm sure I would be
refussed.Decide where you'll be flying the most. They also lighten up the
pocket a fair bit.$$$$$$$$

Most of us don't want people knowing where we are at any given time, BUT it
is getting very hard to go anywhere without one and border crossing in
certain areas is getting very near impossible without a LOT of red tape.
Doing a new panel I'd install, but keep in mind that there is also the other
side of the coin (in Canada anyhow)...... that if it is installed in the
panel it MUST be certified every 24 months whether you use it or not. Even a
float plane on Hudson Bay, that is outside Radar coverage, is not
"airworthy" if it has a transponder installed that hasn't been certified in
the last 24months. The only way to make it legal to fly is to throw the
transponder in the lake, make the log entry and carry on!

If the unit is not in the airplane then of course you are legal, >IF< you
have signed off an annual inspection, in the previous 364 days, and signed a
maintenance release line showing the transponder removed on ...date.. This
is required because your equipment list in your W & B would/should show the
transponder installed to originally be legal). If the transponder is in the
panel then it must have been certified in the last 24 months or your not
legal.

In the US a transponder allows you to utilize the ATC system for flight
following while VFR on a "space available" basis (most of the time).
That is a major safety enhancement with traffic advisories at low cost
and hassle.

Hi Mike !

Very few Rebels have transponders (they're Rebels ! ;-) ),
probably most Elites and Mooses will have them - these guys have
the money, and the desire/need to go to big airports.

Personally, it's the last thing I'll buy - I'd MUCH rather
spend a quarter of the cost and buy a really good GPS, so <I'll>
know where <I> am, without someone else telling me I'm 1/4" into
<THEIR> airspace, and fining me !!

I've hear reports of re-certification costing in the
$500 to $600 range, as the complete pitot/static system and all
instruments attached to it must be tested and calibrated - and
discarded if outside limits ! (I also heard this must be done
<annually> - but if Wayne says it's 24 months, that's "A Good Thing"(tm) !! ;-)
(Maybe that was for commercially registered aircraft ?? )

Anyway - leave space for one, as the bureauocrats are
taking over the world, in the name of "safety" !! So, sooner or
later, even though there's a much better, safer system available
at considerably less cost, we'll likely get stuck with transponders !
But don't buy one now, unless you really need it - like all things
electronic, they are going digital & the price is coming down !

Same goes for a GPS - don't buy until you get the airplane
FLYING - the price is coming down, and the features are going up
at a great rate !! Just buy a VAL Comm radio, IF you even want
a radio, for now, and "Get it Flying !! It'll never be 'finished' !!!"

So Wayne, does the insurance thing apply if the oscar november switch is in
the off position? I understand the resentment of big brother watching in the
great withe north, but I do fly under the mode c veil of Detroit and although my
aircraft does not require it, I can come and visit alot easier with it on.
To not use one around here is kinda like trying to cross a race track when
the cars are doin 200 and you can't quite see them. But you do have to listen
to atc.
Oh well, I vote for putting one in. Curt 97MR

If I hadn't of sold the brand new KX76A that I had for my Rebel (that I
bought at Osh '95 but took Bob P's tact and never installed, so I sent it in
for mod upgrades and then resold it 2 years ago) it would have been
installed by now with todays environment (although not sure how well I would
do with the certification end of things sinced I'd have to deliver DJK to
the city to keep it legal... as nobody up here does certifications).

If your Transponder installation >HAS< been certified in the last 24 months
(Canada), you can leave the switch in the off position if you wish and your
insurance company wouldn't have an out!!
