cowl brace
cowl brace
Hello
The cowl brace in the MAM manual is 3 1/4" in height and 6" wide.Is this
enough height for maximum cooling or should one make this a little higher.
Waynes' seems to be a bit bigger in height and width. Is this due to making a
4 door cowl?
All replies much appreciated.

cowl brace
Wayne
Brian sent me the cowling manual. Your brace has 2 holes in it as well as
the 45* angle brace which is not shown in the MAM plans. It looks a little
bigger.
A while back I thought I read that this cowling was a little deficient for
the exiting air.Hence a little higher brace.
Thanks again
Murray

Seriously, I don't think it's bigger but I will measure it tomorrow and let
you know for sure. You are talking the lower brace off the bottom of the
firewall that I also have the extra brace on a 45* angle behind it, to hold
the frames shape when all the doors are off.

If you don't put the 45* angle brace on it, as shown in my pictures, the
frame work will sag when you have all four doors off. It just needs that
little extra to hold it up.
I will measure what I built and get back to you, but I think I used the MAM
supplied piece at the time.

Murray, my lower cowl brace is 3 5/8" high by 8" wide. The flange attached
to the bottom of the firewall is 8" and then the lower flange is trimmed
down to 7". This works with the way I made the cowling, with a 1" angle
running down each side of the filter box to mount the lower piano hinge to
for the bottom doors. 7" wide on the brace gives just enough for the angle
to mount as well as the anchor nut/screw combination to attach it. I believe
there is a head on shot of the air inlet that lets you see the angle/piano
hinge set up in the archives. If you need something clearer and more
detailed let me know!

Murray, I should add that my cylinders run around 375*F so I have plenty of
air movement through the cowling the way I built it. My oil temperature
sometimes runs on the warm side around 230*F but I let it so I know that I
have no water in the engine! I believe this is more because I have a stupid
vernthane temp regulator in my screen housing than cowl design, as the
regulator doesn't allow oil flow until it reaches a certain temperature. I
should change to a straight screen housing and put the cold oil bypass valve
back in so the oil cooler is running at all times and then make a slider
valve for the oil cooler for winter usage.
Cheers,
Wayne

Brian sent me the cowling manual. Your brace has 2 holes in it as welllittlethe 45* angle brace which is not shown in the MAM plans. It looks aforbigger.
A while back I thought I read that this cowling was a little deficientthe exiting air.Hence a little higher brace.
Thanks again
Murray
