Sun & Fun

Post by Ralph Baker » Fri Feb 17, 2012 9:38 pm

Murphy wil NOT be at Sun & Fun this year according to Elaine.

My take on this is that they have managed to create unflyable weather the
last 3 (?) years and missed the all important first days. It ended up
being a bad investment in terms of personel time and money. They will go
to some of the Northwest flyins and Oshkosh which don't have quite the same
risk. I will miss them but can understand the business decision. Perhaps
the "found" time will go towards cleaning up the manual and CD. :):):)

Note to Bob P. - do you think the barbeque will still take place?

Sun & Fun

Post by Bob Patterson » Fri Feb 17, 2012 9:38 pm

Hi Ralph !

Missing the first few days really DID hurt - but that's
what happens when you only leave 3 days to get there, in the
winter weather. I think at least a week is needed to be safe,
and even that might not be enough, if the weather's really bad !
(That, of course, increases costs ....)

I doubt they'll have the party, without all the Murphy staff
there to do the serving (and some of the running around !). THAT
really WILL be missed !!! Maybe we'll go back to the old "Builders
Get-together" at the BBQ Restaurant on the grounds .....

Sounds like there are a fair number of Murphy builders
planning to go to SnF, in spite of the economy, and the terrible
condition of the Canadian looney !!! Anybody want to join in
a "group Rebel Fly Down" ???

If anyone is going to S&F through or near South Carolina in a Rebel or
Elite and has an open right seat I will pay all the fuel cost from SC to
S&F and back to SC in return for stick time. I am taildragger endorsed and
need some rebel or Elite time for the insurance company before we finish
our Elite.
Thanks,

Post by Bob Patterson » Fri Feb 17, 2012 10:04 pm

Hi Ralph !

I would have been happy to pick you up - we usually go
over Shelby and Newberry and stop at Thomson anyway, so a small
detour wouldn't have been a problem ..... BUT, we've had a change of plans !

Anna has managed to get off work, but ONLY for the 6th to
15th, so we're going to fly commercial to Orlando & drive over.
(At least it is flying !) With weather uncertainties this time of
year, we just couldn't guarantee getting her back in time, sooooo ...

The rest of the "Rebel Run to Sun 'n Fun" group are still
planning to go, dates still TBA.... Maybe there'll be someone
else who can stop. Check the Rebel Ramble list (www.rebel-ramble@dcsol.com).

The Murphy BBQ party at Lakeland South Airport is ON, Monday night,
same place as last year, and everybody is welcome !! This is
THE best feed in Florida - don't miss the Cajun cooking !!!
Get tickets from the Murphy Guys on the flight line, with the
S-R/Moose - no booth, but they'll be giving demos from the flight
line every day !! You can call the factory and book tickets with
Marion, too.

Looking forward to seeing everybody at the show - we'll be
in the campground with the motorhomes - Poberezny Lane, south-west of
the pond..... with the rest of "the usual suspects" !!

Any Rebels or other MAM's. did you fly? If so, how?

Tell us a story! I can't wait until May 5 to hear.

Hi Brian, Tony from Michigan here. We went to Sun 'N' Fun, GREAT Murphy Party
on Monday night. The crowd was a little light, just Robin (Murphy's test
pilot), our host and hostess (at the airpark) and my wife and myself.
Delightful, informative time! Enjoyed Sun 'N' Fun, the weather was nice.
Hope to see you at your airport, with Curt, to check your progress.

Sincerely,
Tony Adas

Post by lawsonb » Fri Feb 17, 2012 10:04 pm

Hey Tony,

Thanks for that. And are you going to the May 5 meeting in Brampton?
I'm going to run away on you again though, because I'm going to an
auction in Toronto on May 2, then staying down that way until the
meeting. I will be driving all the way back to Windsor AFTER the
meeting. So I hope that you will make it so we can meet. Of course
you're welcome to come see us at the Windsor 401 hangar, and maybe we
can reciprocate and have a look at your progress too. We love "field
trips" in our group.

I thought that Bob and Anna Patterson were going to be at Sun & Fun.
Did you see them? There were a few people went from Windsor, but none
of them that are working on the Rebel. One of our EAA 185 members
flew down in his T-18 homebuilt, and after 2 days at Lakeland, as he
says, he "turned right" and went to Los Angeles via Albuquerque, and
back home via Reno. He was gone 10 days or so, and flew just about 35
hours.

Anyway, thanks again for replying. We'll stay in touch.

Take care.

Brian Lawson,
Windsor, Ontario.

Sun & Fun

Post by Ralph Baker » Fri Feb 17, 2012 10:49 pm

I talked to Colleen Friday and as of now there is no Murphy related
party / meeting / barbeque in the works. Brian and Robin are in the
Phillipines related to a move of manufacturing location for the fast
builds. The kind people who have hosted us in past years have sold
their Rebel kit so that is a slim chance.

I asked Colleen to advise murphy-rebel@dcsol.com as well as MAM website
post if there was a decision to have any sort of get together. If
anyone has a suggestion as to a time / place to meet during the day or
early evening put it here for discussion. It could be as simple as lawn
chairs and coolers at a designated place in the campground.

Post by Rickhm at home » Fri Feb 17, 2012 10:49 pm

Ya know, I like the Murphy product, but they don't seem very interested in
marketing. I recall several years ago going to a dinner at some local
university near Oshkosh. It was great fun and lots of opportunity to see,
hear, etc. Very similar to the spirit this service provides. But there is
nothing like seeing the people and talking face to face, even as good as
this is! I'm not going to Sun & Fun, but is sure seems like a shame that
MAM can't be the organizer.

Lonnie Benson

Sun & Fun

Post by Lonnie Benson » Fri Feb 17, 2012 10:52 pm

Rick,

Its a problem of economics. MAM was not making enough sales at SNF to even
begin to cover the cost of moving airplanes and people from Chilliwak to
Lakeland. Several years the airplanes arrived when the show was half over
because of bad weather. The air shows in the Pacific Northwest , Alaska and
Canada is where they make their sales. Or so I've been told.

Before the Great Cajun Cookouts the Murphy builders would get together on
their own at the Home Builders Bar-B-Que Cafe which is located near the FAA
Bldg. Lets pick a date such as Saturday, April 5th and a time, say 5:30 or
6:00 and meet at the Bar-B-Que. If anyone else has any suggestions lets
kick them around on the List.

The MAM builders that are flying in could maybe leave a note, with their
aircraft location, at the Homebuilt Corner HQ Shack on the flight line so
those of us still building know where to go to get our inspiration and to
see your neat mods, paint jobs etc..

Elsie and I will arrive at SNF about a week before the opening day. I will
be working in Campground Registration and Elsie will be at the Virginia
State Fly-In table in the Regional Fly-In Tent which is usually near the
Gifts of Flight store. That would be another good place to leave messages.

We plan to park our big white Coachmen travel trailer, with VA plates, on
the South side of Charlie Ave in the campground. If your in the Campground
stop by and say hello. We are usually not too far from the Ontario group
that park their campers in a big circle.
