Bob I had e-mailed Shell to confirm that there wasn't any alcohol in
their gas so I can use some for the Chief (with an additive).
I had also asked why one supplier would have alcohol and not another.
Here is their reply confirming your note:
Jim
Mr. Cole,
Thank you for taking the time to visit Shell Canada's website.
In response to your inquiry, Shell Canada does not have any alcohol
based product in their fuel. I unfortunately cannot answer your
question on why certain companies have alcohol in their fuel. I can
only speak for our company.
Best regards,
Natasha Guillot

Shell/Alcohol
Shell/Alcohol
I used to use Sunoco's high test all the time for the 912, as it was the
highest octane rating around, but then all of a sudden their pumps started
being placarded with "this fuel may contain alcohol" so that was the end of
that.
As for Shell they APPEAR to add some other weird stuff to their fuel it
seems though. My '98 GMC Sierra's engine light comes on about 2 days after
filling up at our local Shell. It then takes about 3 tanks full from
anywhere else and it goes out. Light was out for about 9 months and then it
came on again a couple weeks ago. The first thing I asked my kids was did
anyone get gas at the Shell station (like I asked not too) in my truck and
the answer was yes. A couple tanks full from elsewhere and the light's back
out again.
There was also a refinery batch last summer that had an additive screw up
that coated a bunch of fuel level transmitters with a layer of goop and they
quit working. If anyone had this happen Shell will apparently replace your
fuel tank, etc for you! If it's in a land operated vehicle that is!!!
Cheers,
Wayne
