Hi ALL
Mam's muffler incl. heat shrouds is $1,375:00 for 0-320.
Seems this would be the easiest way go and not a bad price either. Saw a
recent add for sale, Cessna 172 muffler 150hr. $1,000:00.

Hi Wayne
Thanks for the reply. I should have said an exhaust system. If you haven't
made one or have a plane to look at and don't want to spend the rest of your
life figurring things out before you hopefully build it right I might be
better off to buy the MAM set up.
Thanks for the heads up on the exhaust system efficiency. I will ask a ew
more questions and then hopefully make the right choice. Will keep the list
informed of my edjumecated decision.
Thanks again

If you are referring to the High Performance exhaust for the speed cowling
they are not mufflers. Simply a set of cross over straight pipes with a tone
that I can distinguish from any other aircraft from about 4 miles out! The
heat shroud is just formed around the section of straight pipe before it
gets to the firewall.
The old FWF kit for the nose bowl and alum doors style cowling used to come
with two piper style mufflers with the two front pipes feeding into one and
the two rear pipes feeding into the other one, with a heat shroud that
wrapped around both of them where they sit under the engine if front of the
oil sump. Quite a bit quieter, but possibly not as efficient.
Cheer,
Wayne

Yes Wayne:
If you would please send me some pics this would be helpful as I am also
thinking of building my own. Buy some Canadian Tire pipes and go for it.
When I say build myself, I would get the help of an experienced welder. I'm
not sure if I'm thinking straight. Your pics may help me decide.

Hi Murray !
Do yourself a big favour and just order the factory exhaust
system ! It's a beautiful piece of work, made out of STAINLESS
STEEL (just THINK of the fun that'd be to do yourself!), AND
it includes expansion joints and swivel ball joints !
If you make one out of iron/steel, you'll be doing it again
in a couple of years 'cause it rusted out - IF it doesn't crack
first !! Cracks are pretty common in the old iron pipes ...
Save your energy for setting up the cowling for easy
maintenance ! ;-^) :-)

You mean it's not fun ;)???
I am also giving some thought to the exhaust but have to do a custom job
in my case for the Subaru. I was thinking of ordering some stainless to
try because I have been given the impression that it is not difficult to
weld, although argon back purging is required. Anybody had difficulty
fabricating stainless? Seems there is a choice between 0.060 thick 304
series and the preferred but more expensive 0.035 321 series. Was
thinking of ordering from Burns Stainless in California unless anybody
knows a Canadian source for mandrel bends?

I've posted 7 pics to the archives in Rebel -Engine. Old steel straight
pipes, double muffs and the certified 4 into1 on Bernie Desantis's machine.
Guess I brain gapped and never took any pics of the high quality
"Foslington" Exhaust that MAM is now/was suppling insteadof bothering to
have their own made up. I installed same on Bob's XWI and it is a work of
art with expansion joints that peg in place etc to allow for expansion
without cracking etc. Maybe someone else that has this system can post a few
pics to make the archives complete.
Sorry for the file sizes, forgot to sort that out with the son last time he
was home. Maybe next week when he is home for reading week. Ever since I
upgraded to this 17" LCD monitor, my pic definition has increased 4 times.
Cheers,
Wayne

Argon back purging is not an absolute necessity. You get real good results
by using a stainless backing flux. Solar flux is one brand (Harris Welco
makes a similar product). You mix the powdered flux with alcohol, paint the
inside and outside surfaces of the fitted pipes, and let the alcohol
evaporate. Welding through the flux (TIG preferably) is amazingly easy and
the inner bead is as nice as the external bead. This stuff works so well,
you'll wonder why it's not more commonly known.
I'd strongly suggest that you use the 321 tubing, welded with an ER347
filler rod. It'll cost a bit more, but you'll spend less time repairing the
system. I've always bought my tube bends from Aircraft Spruce. Pricing has
seemed reasonable, but this is not to say that other sources are not
available.
Remember: Cleanliness when welding. Never use a carbon steel brush on the
stainless or sand the stainless with abrasives that have been used on carbon
steel. Get a gas lens for your TIG torch if you don't have one. Do NOT
turn the argon up to 'improve the gas shield'.
And yes, it is fun, if you've got the right equipment and the patience.
Stainless is not harder to weld than mild steel, it's just a bit less
forgiving of poor practices/procedure.

Thanks for resizing Mike! I used to have a perfect size in Paint Shop Pro
and now using even a smaller Image resize I end up 4 times heavier
definition. Makes no sense to me just because I changed monitors. Will see
what my son can do and if not I will add another program (Ifran View) to the
machine!

freeHi Wayne, you should download IrfanView from the software area... This
uploadedimage editing program is just great. I simply opened the files you
machine.and then saved them again, and cut the file size by about 70%.
