I don't recall reading much about wheel pants for the Rebel?
Good idea? Not a good idea?
I only want to install them if they will gain me a few mph.
Does anyone know how much they help/hurt?
Any thoughts on where to buy a set, how much they would cost etc. Anyone have
some they would like to sell?

Also, I am looking for a project to do next winter.
(when I was building the Rebel, my wife complained that I was always in the
garage. This winter I had no projects so I spent all my time in the house with
her helping with the dishes and laundry and such....... She now wants me back
in the garage :-)
Having said this, I am considering building up an EJ-22 for some comparisons
against the EA-81. (Is the EJ-25 not an option ?) If anyone has a bunch of
installation pics, I would sure appreciate looking through them.
If so, email me offline so as not to bother those who have no interest in
this. I have high speed so I can take all the pics you can throw at me!
Great thing about homebuilding, it never ends if you don't want it too!

G'day From "Down Under" !
I was fortunate enough to have a Reg 35 (aircraft designer) friend
extol the virtues of adding wheel pants to our Rebel while we were
building.
Steve, (the Reg 35 engineer) , stated that a pair of good wheel pants
would add around 5 Knots to our cruise speed (about 6 m.p.h.) ....and
that was good enough for us !
We have a "tarted up" 0-235 , and our Top Speed is 120 Knots straight &
level .... cruise is anywhere between 95 to 105 Knots ... at around 18
litres per hour ... depending on power settings.
We made the wheel pants by getting a copy made from a Citabria wheel
pant ... then spilt them down the middle and widened them by 40 mm
(about an 1 1/2") as we have the "tundra tyres" (wide ones).
All in all, I think the wheel pants make a fair difference in speed ...
and make the plane look a whole lot neater as well !

Wheel Pants
Hi Fr.... uhhhh.... Paco !
I think Murphy still sells 2 kinds of wheel pants, although
delivery might be a couple of months ... There's the old, fat style,
made to fit the fat DICO or Carlyle tires, which make great mudguards,
but don't do anything at all for speed. Like the "speed cowl", they
look sexy, but really do zip for speed. Then there's the long, skinny
pants, made for the skinny 600 x 6 tires ONLY - they do add 3 to 5 mph,
if you mount them very low on the tire, covering most of it....
but they are so tight, they can fill with snow or mud, and freeze
up in winter. :-(
Both are a pain, though, because you can't stand on them to
refuel or check caps ! We DID have a good set on our old Aeronca
Super Chief - they were fat, and you could stand on them - but didn't
do anything much for speed. These are probably available from scrap
yards, or Spruce, etc. ... for $$$ .
Building up an EJ-25 would be a GREAT idea, IMHO ! It will
give you a significant boost over the EA-81, with more weight,
unfortunately. Still, a better choice than an EJ-22, if you can
get your hands on one for a reasonable price. You seem to be doing
very well with the EA-81, so maybe it's not worth the effort, unless
you're considering amphibs in the future, or longer cross-countries.
And speaking of x-country, (shameless plug !) how about
joining us on the Rebel Ramble this year ??!! Two trips - to the
West Coast July 2 - 20th, or the East Coast August 24- Sept. 27th !!
All kinds of aircraft welcome - so far we have Rebels, C-172, C-150,
ultralight Zenith 601, Cherokee, and a motorglider !!! :-)
We're anxiously awaiting more registrations !!!
