used rebel - kit changes

Post by bransom » Fri Feb 17, 2012 10:42 pm

Hi all,
I'm considering a couple of partially completed Rebel kits that were new in
mid-90s. Two current possibilities (1994 and 1995) both have the better
wheels and brakes, and formed windscreen that Murphy apparently changed to
after the first few years. I'm also aware of a revised plans set Murphy
released in 1999, which I'd have to get. Both of these builders got as far
as rib attachment to one wing, stopping at wet wing construction. :)

I'm trying to decide whether to take on some uncertainty risks (and cost
savings) of buying a used kit, or just get a new kit from Murphy. What kind
of changes are there to the kit since mid-90s? Would any of the changes
require much in the way of different parts/materials, or are they mostly
revisions to build methods?

Thanks in advance,
-Ben Ransom

Sorry to hear of another case of AIDS (Aviation Induced Divorce Syndrome)
and it's a shame that you don't even get to keep the airplane!!!

Good luck!

Ben, I don't know what you are refering to with "a revised plans set Murphy
released in 1999" as there are no plans supplied for the Rebel, but I
suppose that you are refering to a manual update. In some cases having the
latest update can add confusion to an older kit but probably a good thing to
pick up and compare both and decide which route to take with construction.

As for date of kit, other than upgrading to supplying the formed windshield
around late 1993/early 1994 and the newer JDM 3 piece wheels there are no
significant changes right from 1991, other than the FUS-30 (last tail cone
piece) got thicker to .032 and the lower Fus-10's (.020") got upgraded to
Fus-70's (.025") from the door post to the firewall. All these things are
already upgraded in 1994 kits. They were already done by the time they got
to serial #240 in '93 and the two piece tail spring attach came soon after
that so either kit should be as up to date as buying one direct in 2003. If
you find a great deal with good workmanship why not get a jump start.

Cheers,
Wayne G. O'Shea

Legeorgen

used rebel - kit changes

Post by Legeorgen » Fri Feb 17, 2012 10:42 pm

Ben,

I purchased a presold kit from December 93. In addition what Wayne said... I
purchased, from MAM, elevator pulleys not included with my kit. And I applied
most of the Ontario MOD's that have been discussed on the list and can be
looked up in the archives. Go to the MAM web site and down load all the
service bulletins and upgrades listed with their dates and compare them to
your kit.

My preformed windshield, that came with this kit, required a center brace
that I didn't think I was going to need. It was popping in and out from wind
compression.

You should not have a problem with a used kit and I would not hesitate to do
it again and save a few bucks. Make sure the previous owner did quality work.
If you're not sure, have a knowledgeable friend or A&P evaluate the work with
you.

This is a great airplane and I'm sure you will not be disappointed.

Bruce/Ben, must have been one of the very first moulded windshields. I know
that Robin Dyck noted the same pop in and out and couldn't peg a speed at
which it came in at but said he sure knew when it went out (as it scared the
shit out of him when it did!). They then had L&P mould more of a compound
curve into it on future windshields and they do not need the center brace
anymore. I ordered my first moulded windshield on Sept 12, 1994 and it had
the compound curve across the center section and didn't need a brace.

Cheers,
Wayne

Hi Ben:

My wings are 1995, wings 1997 & 2001.The only change I know of was the wing
spar doubler at the strut attach fitting. There are a few mods and some
upgrades which I would build into the kit but these are not basic kit
changes. To get an educated opinion I think I would talk to MURPHY.

Good Luck
