Fus 30 - Tail spring attach bolt - Rebel

Hi Folks!

Well today I have official given in (or up) on my "the old multi-strap and
Fus-49 bulkhead is as good as the newer motor mount style fitting (Fus-84
and -88 I believe) and Fus-49 bulkhead to attach the tail spring to the
fuselage" schpeel.

It took 7&1/2 years of flying, but while doing part of my annual inspection
today (-18C in the hanger!) I found that while my tail spring attach bolt
still seems to be holding it's own and is tight through the straps and the
Fus 30 and "Ontario" doubler, the bottom flange of the Fus-49 bulkhead is
cracked completely off with about a 3/16" gap between what used to be one
part. Guess I will have to get the can opener out and build some parts for
in there on my Milling machine, to tie it all back together. I though my
tail spring was just starting to flatten out a bit and ignored it throughout
the summer, and in reality it is this 3/16 gap distance, at the broken
flange, that is causing the tailwheel to sit different even though this
distance change isn't really noticable on the outside of the fus-30. The old
if it looks wrong it probably is, check it out "turkey"!!!

With the bolt through the layered straps and Fus-49 flange, all the load is
pulling right on the bottom flange of the Fus-49 bulkhead and with every
hard bump the flange is bending back and forth very slightly until it final
fatigues (took about 700 landing cycles for mine!!). With the motor mount
style attach the fitting is riveted onto the Fus-49, transfering the load so
it is distributed through the two side flanges instead.

It must be something about Mondays around here, as last Monday while putting
Ron's new Wheel skis and tail ski onto his Rebel we found that his Fus-30
was cracked across the attach bolt hole (side to side) and he was going to
make a Fus-30 doubler this weekend to repair. Have a good look at your
Fus-49 as well Ron!!

At least our spouses know where to find us!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Wayne

That sure is a lot of landings on the Rebel. Obviously your original setup
must have been pretty strong. There are probably not too many Rebels with
the other tailwheel fitting to compare against. Don't fee too bad!

Is the 'Ron' you are referring to Ron Barber by chance? If so give him a
big 'Hello' from me.

No Brian, Ron Hamson from Ottawa!! If he gives me the okay I will post some
pics to the files, of his Rebel during the ski installation and heading for
home!

As for the landing cycles on my Rebel it's probably pretty close, or a
little higher, as they don't let me very far away from home too often. Most
flights are about 0.4hr on average and some days in an hour of "playing" in
the yard I can do about 20 take offs and landings without flying over anyone
elses property. Not like Brampton where you have to follow 10 spam cans out
on their (hobbs time instructor billing) 7 mile final approaches.

Hoping since it was probably broken all summer that it will last through the
winter, but will have to keep a close eye on it. The other option is to pull
the tail into my heated workshop thru one of the 9' doors (unless mother
nature turns up the thermostat) and tarp the door shut so it's warm enough
to tackle working in there. Going to mill a solid bathtub fitting like the
older engine mount fittings and then try to drill and work through the hole
by the mixer assembly to drill and rivet same in place on the Fus-49.

You are up too late! You must be another night owl!

You are right about Brampton and following spam cans. Before I got the
Rebel going, I was practicing in the club Super Cub. Runway 33 was
active. The 'pilots' in the Cessnas complete with instructors I guess were
turning base leg over Sandalwood parkway - deep into Pearson airspace. (Do
you know how far that is away, I would have to get out my sectional to
double check...probably 6 miles or so). Takes an extra 20 minutes in the
Super Cub & I was paying to fly just to practice landings. With that
circuit, I got about 2 landings per hour. One instructor started giving me
a hard time over the radio as he said I cut him off. I had the nerve to
turn base about a mile in front of him. Technically he was right, but in
no way was flight safety compromised. I was already back in the downwind
before he came within 500 yards of the runway.

I gave up of course & flew another day.

I did that when I delivered George Christie's Rebel back to Brampton in the
spring. Six "Spammers" on final for Rwy 15 and me on a tight downwind. I
called #1 base and final for Rwy 15, with much screaming from said "drag me
ins", cursing that I couldn't do that. I landed and got off the runway at
the very first exit (taxi way D) and was already talking with George and
Rick, by Bob P's hanger, before the first C172 landed!! Nobody every tell
these guys that there is nothing more embarrassing than having an engine
failure in the circuit and having to wreck the airplane??

Hey Wayne, why don't you take your misses on a trip to the beautiful Alaskan
interior? You can do your repairs in my unheated shop here... since it's
still 35-40 F everyday! I'd happily trade weather with you if I could... I
want to go skiing!
