Mike,

You had asked about how far back the roof mounted Super Rebel flap slider
mechanism moves during full flap deflection.

We we out flying yesterday and measured one half inch (1/2") deflection from
the slider stop to the slider block at full flaps.

Thanks Chris. MAC makes a servo with exactly 1/2" deflection. That will be
perfect. This will give us a full scale reading on the MAC indicator from
ailerons in reflex to fully extended.

Mike,
I am interested in more about the MAC servo approach to the reflex. I have
been thinking about disconnecting the reflex mechanism when I put the floats
on. I have very little aileron authority with full flaps now and expect less
with floats. My concern is one more thing to forget in a go around. What is
the stop to stop time for the 1/2" travel? Where do you plan to put the
switch, what kind of switch?

I'm putting the switch on the panel right next to the indicator near the
middle so the pilot and copilot can reach it. I'm leaving the option of
hooking it to switches on the pilot stick for later. I don't know what the
stop to stop time is for the 1/2" travel and I don't really care. I will be
making my aileron droop or no aileron droop decision well before final
approach based on crosswinds reported and/or experienced on downwind. I can
always go around and remove the aileron droop if there's more crosswind
noted on final than I thought. If it's a float plane landing I'll probably
not ever use the droop. That will be for those short sand bar landings on
wheels. I am also planning on getting the 0.7" servo. I may end up with
markings on the indicator and/or hard stops depending on flight test
results. Incidentally, the installation should be as easy for an existing
airplane as it is for one not built yet. Simply remove the aileron horn on
the slide block, turn the slide block around so the attachment points face
forward. Drill another hole in the block on the other end the same distance
as the original hole for the horn to attach to. Remove the spring setup on
the box structure forward of the slide block and mount your servo there.
You'll also have to remove the slide block stop. You can either put one or
two stops on each side or no stop at all if you trust your servo attachment.
Rig an attachment from the servo to the attachment points on the block and
you're in business.

Also, the prototype cabin top mounted flap mechanism is almost complete.
After powder coating, it looks great! Rob and I are very happy with how it
turned out. Without having tested it, the design seems to have a similar
mechanical advantage as the floor mounted system. I don't really anticipate
a "he-man" pull being necessary. And there is still an easy way to add a
spring assist for extension if desired.

Rob and I both have our rudder system in place, cables set up, and tested.
We cannot figure out why Murphy has the forward rudder pulleys mounted on
the hot side of the firewall. Simply turn them around and mount them on the
cold side of the firewall. Plenty of room and they work great. At worst,
you might have to file your brackets a bit if you've already made them for
the hot side. Keeps them out of the grease and grime as well as one less
thing cluttering up the firewall. A couple of access panels still provides
access.

The thing I like about your system is you have the choice to use or not use
the droop. There are times on floats that the full reflex will help get into
a tight spot. I like the flap handle overhead, post some pictures when you
get a chance. I was thinking the aileron switch could go on the flap handle
or the stick.

I just can't seem to make a decision on a digital camera. Too many choices.
Otherwise, I'd have some pictures for the archives already. In the mean
time, I'm still in the mode of taking pictures until the roll runs out, then
scan them in, then post them. Someday, soon I hope, I'll get some pictures
posted.

I'm putting the switch on the panel right next to the indicator near the
middle so the pilot and copilot can reach it. I'm leaving the option of
hooking it to switches on the pilot stick for later. I don't know what
the
stop to stop time is for the 1/2" travel and I don't really care. I will
be
making my aileron droop or no aileron droop decision well before final
approach based on crosswinds reported and/or experienced on downwind. I
can
always go around and remove the aileron droop if there's more crosswind
noted on final than I thought. If it's a float plane landing I'll
probably
not ever use the droop. That will be for those short sand bar landings on
wheels. I am also planning on getting the 0.7" servo. I may end up with
markings on the indicator and/or hard stops depending on flight test
results. Incidentally, the installation should be as easy for an existing
airplane as it is for one not built yet. Simply remove the aileron horn
on
the slide block, turn the slide block around so the attachment points face
forward. Drill another hole in the block on the other end the same
distance
as the original hole for the horn to attach to. Remove the spring setup
on
the box structure forward of the slide block and mount your servo there.
You'll also have to remove the slide block stop. You can either put one
or
two stops on each side or no stop at all if you trust your servo
attachment.
Rig an attachment from the servo to the attachment points on the block and
you're in business.

Also, the prototype cabin top mounted flap mechanism is almost complete.
After powder coating, it looks great! Rob and I are very happy with how
it
turned out. Without having tested it, the design seems to have a similar
mechanical advantage as the floor mounted system. I don't really
anticipate
a "he-man" pull being necessary. And there is still an easy way to add a
spring assist for extension if desired.

Rob and I both have our rudder system in place, cables set up, and tested.
We cannot figure out why Murphy has the forward rudder pulleys mounted on
the hot side of the firewall. Simply turn them around and mount them on
the
cold side of the firewall. Plenty of room and they work great. At worst,
you might have to file your brackets a bit if you've already made them for
the hot side. Keeps them out of the grease and grime as well as one less
thing cluttering up the firewall. A couple of access panels still
provides
access.

I am interested in more about the MAC servo approach to the reflex. I
have
been thinking about disconnecting the reflex mechanism when I put the
floats
on. I have very little aileron authority with full flaps now and expect
less
with floats. My concern is one more thing to forget in a go around. What
is
the stop to stop time for the 1/2" travel? Where do you plan to put the
switch, what kind of switch?

Thanks Chris. MAC makes a servo with exactly 1/2" deflection. That
will
be
perfect. This will give us a full scale reading on the MAC indicator
from
ailerons in reflex to fully extended.

We we out flying yesterday and measured one half inch (1/2")
deflection
from
the slider stop to the slider block at full flaps.
