My SG-3 and SG-4 top and bottom plates that react the spring gear inboard
bolt loads are 1.50 wide X 4.82 long. It looks like they should be about
5.20 long to completely span accross the square tubes. Looks suspiciously
like Murphy forgot to add the thickness of the two 0.20 thick FUS-424's
Gussets when they calculated the length? But maybe not. Seems there have
been some in service problems in this area. Am I missing something? Are my
parts not manufactured correctly? Or do the plates not span the width of
the tubes for a reason.

I also have the short length (4. sg-3 sg-4 plates that came with R-254.
This length is about where the curve starts on the square tubes. Maybe the curve supports the plates so it doesn't have to be full wide of both tubes. I do see your point and I think I would have made them a little longer, but it does save a little weight.
Good luck

Wishing I wouldn't have paid the big bucks for Spring Gear.

Rebel Spring Gear Plates
Hi Jim and Chuck,
The newer kits now have these plates extend past the curved inside corners and cover the whole tube. The newer kits also have a 2 inch angle that sets over the forward tube and requires even longer bolts. I have spring gear that was purchased in 94 on 357R and the plates where short and installed this way by the previous builder. I did incorporate the 2 inch angles and after 20 hours have not experienced any problems operating off a dirt strip. I keep a close eye on this part of the fuselage, however, to detect any deformation.
