[rebel-builders] Elite Tail Mods

Post by Bob Palmer » Sun Feb 19, 2012 5:41 pm

I am just guessing here but I would think that anything that is not a
safety issue would not be written in the official manual or adopted as a
change because the original method is acceptable. I was urged by Murphy
staff to modify the horizontal stab and elevator and did so via a verbal
description before seeing examples on Mike Davis's site. The reason I
was given and backed up by more than one pilot with experience on the
Elite is that the original design was too sensitive. I think I can see
more than one reason why that would be but it made sense to me to follow
the advise. Except, I didn't round the tips of the spade because it
wasn't stressed to do so, only that /some /builders also rounded the
spade tips.

I think that everyone should give due regard to the expertise of the
people who designed and test flew this airplane before making /any/ mods
that are not listed by MAM. However, I have modified our Elite because I
am allowed to in the rules, I build to a recognized standard and I think
it will work. I don't agree with every mod I have seen and a few seem a
bit loony. ( and maybe me!)

The elevator spade mod sounds like it would make the airplane more
comfortable for the average person to fly and a little less likely to
over stress it in some situations. I am not sure if there is any reason
to change the rudder.
However, that is just my best guess.

Anyhow, I've gotten lots of advice on the in's and out's of the Elite tail design
and elevator/rudder tip mods. Based on what seems like an overly-sensisitve
nature of the tail control surfaces, it sounds like these are "must-do" mods.
My question is: if so many people have chosen to do these "highly
encouraged" mods, why hasn't Murphy issued any guidance on the subject
(economy and personnel issues aside... this has been a topic of discussion for
years from what I can tell)?

Is there anybody out there that has elected NOT to down-size/re-shape their
tip spades? My apologies if this topic has been beat to death, but I did a
search and it didn't come up with much other than lots of great pictures and
how-to guides... all of which are great, just looking for more discussion.

Thanks!

[rebel-builders] Elite Tail Mods

I have the original tips on both my elevators and rudder. Flying my first
100 hours as an amphib this year, I like the control feel.

I am about to swap out the floats and become a tail dragger for the winter.
I will provide a pilot's report during November. Sensitivity could be more
of an issue at the higher speeds once I remove all the draggy float
hardware.
