[rebel-builders] Rebel Firewall

Post by Dick Wampach » Sun Feb 19, 2012 11:35 pm

Does any one know the reason for using a heavy stainless steel firewall,
instead of the lighter weight aluminum?
Could it be a requirement to withstand 2,000* F temp for 5 min? Or
something like that.

[rebel-builders] Rebel Firewall

Post by Wayne G. O'Shea » Sun Feb 19, 2012 11:35 pm

Do yah think Dick ??? ;O)

Issue was Murphy started with and continued to ship aluminum firewalls for
the Rebel well into 1993 in Canada... until the inspection program had
rejected so many airplanes at final inspection that the out cry from kit
owners put a stop to it FOR CANADIAN KITS. Those that complained got a sheet
of stainless to rivet over top, some were luckier and got a formed firewall
out of stainless as a replacement.

I have a feeling though... that aluminum firewalls continued to get put in
US bound kit shipments for a time period well after that.. but I could be
wrong.

FWIW, mine is #496 shipped in 1995 to the US with a formed SS firewall.
Remember too, anyone who hasn't drilled their SS yet, to beer dip your
drill bit each hole, or you'll quickly heat ruin the bits. OK, I guess
any other liquid would be just as good.

I've bought bits from http://www.aircraft-tool.com and
http://www.browntool.com/
Love those jobber bits.

A little bit of cutting fluid and good firm pressure is good for
stainless since it tends to work harden. You want the drill bit to bite
and cut not nibble/wear its way through. Even better if you can put it
in a drill press.

No point wasting the beer on stainless, you want to save that to enjoy
when you sit back & admire your fine handiwork ;-P

Following Wayne's comment, 583E was shipped in '97(?) and resides north
of the 49th. so those in the US may find differences.

I don't know about the beer but use a sharp drill & a good lubricant and two
more important points. Slow down the RPM (about 30-40 Ft/minute) and back up
the SS with 1/2" thick wood or 1/8" scrap aluminum. If you really want clean
hole laminate the SS between the scrap aluminum.
