Float pump out cups on 1800's

Hi guys! The real reason I came in from the shop....anybody found a pump
that actually fits these undersize pump out cups Murphy made for the
1800's??? You'd think if you were going to make 'em you'd make them to fit
the standard Beckson pump and not some oddball size that fits nothing on the
market like plugs. and the nice new auto plugs with the check ball built in.
The MAM cups are even smaller than the CAP cups that you use the neck down
adapter on the Beckson pump. I talked with Robin about this a year or so ago
and he told me they neck the pump down with a piece of rad hose. I'm not in
to this adaption stuff and looking to see if anyone has found a pump that
fit in the cups and actually works. Not into making those cup plugs either
with a plastic cap from a chair leg and a piece of bungee....but is someone
knows a pump available will save me a days work and $200 worth of EDO cups
to get me in the water. Some days I wish MAM would just buy off the shelf
items and not make stuff themselves. Can't see a labour/materials savings
when cups and lake-n-air plugs are less than $5 each in quantity.

I will post a list up later tonight or tomorrow of the things I've found,
over the last ~ 32 hours (2 days) of shop time, in need of doing on the
prebuilts for anyone else in the same boat. All in all really happy with
what I've seen in these last few out of the good prebuild factory. About two
FULL days now going over these things. Probably another full one yet before
I can start making spreaders and mounting struts....gotta get the axles
drilled for zerts next...already slotted the torque plates to ease wheel
removal/installation.

Can't help you but might be able to ease the pain....
If you end up replacing them and you can get a better price on pump out
cups in quantity, I for one still need a set!
Or I might even consider purchasing the MAM cups but your recommendation
for them doesn't sound promising ;)

Hi Ken! I just spent ~60 hours doing "probono" work on my f-n-laws 701
amphib and one (of the many) thing to get it into tip top shape was to put
some proper pump out cups in the floats and I already bought enough to do my
floats as well...so I have what I need here. They cost $9 cdn each from
Orillia Aviation if you get them to bead the hose attach area which makes it
nice for retention. Pop the hose on and just safety wire. No need to spend
the money, or hassle, on a ss hose clamp. I believe they are $6.25 without
the beading done. The nice formed rubber Lake-n-Air plugs are $5.85 each.
You can get them cheaper from elsewhere and especially in high volume, but I
needed them pronto and just flew over to Lake St. John in the J3 and picked
them up.

I am leaving the cups and a step area access hatch 'till last. Want to get
them on and rigged up and see how much time I have left....or if the field
is even dry enough to get out of here by then. Was doing nicely until this
week+ of rain and we almost sunk a customers Pegastol on amphibs to the
keels, getting it from the runway to the hanger, when he flew it in at 7:45
tonight.

If I do pull the cups, they will be available as I can't see myself reusing
them if nobody can line up a pump that actually fits them. Hopefully someone
will speak up BEFORE I pull them out.... if they know of a source. So far
all the no name, CTC, Beckson, etc that I have measured or tried are all to
large.

Wayne, I have a nice little cheap plastic pump that I got from a
marine shop here, that works great for me. I did have to put a 3
inch piece of vinyl clear hose piece over the end to make it seal
nicely into the pump out hole, but works perfectly for me. It's
also impervious to fuel and oil. Can't remember the brand, but
will check next time out to the hangar, if I don't forget.

Also, I still use the MAM supplied chair leg type caps, with the
attached strings, and believe it or not, have yet to lose a
single one. So no complaints from me on those.

With the suspension pucks, I have mentioned before on the list
that I use the big blue ones, from the Elite nose gear. They are
pretty solid compared to the original small yellow ones, but not
sure how they compare to the new thicker yellow ones.

Thanks Walter! MAM supplied the chair leg caps and a length of 3/8" bungee
for the pull cord that made no sense. I can see drilling a small hole in the
cap for a cord loop similar to the Lake-n-Air plugs though. Maybe I'll do
that if I can pick up some cord and find the pump you are talking about.

I'm going to give these thick yellow rubbers a go and see how the perform.
Suspect they will just ouze out of place like the smaller ones since the
washers are flat and have no cup shape to them to help retain like my
Belleville washer set up.

Wayne:

I made an adapter just by getting a ABS reducer/adapter(local hardware) and
making some "Adjustments" to it. It fits very nicely into the bottom of the
pump and reduces to the size of the Murphy pump outs. It may not be as
elegant as some but works well. If I get a chance I will take a picture and
upload it.

hi walter what dia and thickness are the blue ones? how many did you
use? they need to be tougher than the thick yellow ones those ones

The small diameter bungee cord was supplied to spring load the
water rudders. They should have supplied another thin rope/thread
for the caps. I just did a loop with a knot, and they've been
good the whole time for me. Like I said, I still have yet to lose
a single one. I'll be down to my hangar tomorrow, so hopefully
will remember to check my pump brand.

washers are flat and have no cup shape to them to help
retain like my
Belleville washer set up.

Hi Ken! I just spent ~60 hours doing "probono" work on
my f-n-laws 701
amphib and one (of the many) thing to get it into tip
top shape was to put
some proper pump out cups in the floats and I already
bought enough to do my
floats as well...so I have what I need here. They cost
$9 cdn each from
Orillia Aviation if you get them to bead the hose
attach area which makes it
nice for retention. Pop the hose on and just safety
wire. No need to spend
the money, or hassle, on a ss hose clamp. I believe
they are $6.25 without
the beading done. The nice formed rubber Lake-n-Air
plugs are $5.85 each.
You can get them cheaper from elsewhere and especially
in high volume, but I
needed them pronto and just flew over to Lake St. John
in the J3 and picked
them up.

I am leaving the cups and a step area access hatch
'till last. Want to get
them on and rigged up and see how much time I have
left....or if the field
is even dry enough to get out of here by then. Was
doing nicely until this
week+ of rain and we almost sunk a customers Pegastol
on amphibs to the
keels, getting it from the runway to the hanger, when
he flew it in at 7:45
tonight.

If I do pull the cups, they will be available as I
can't see myself reusing
them if nobody can line up a pump that actually fits
them. Hopefully someone
will speak up BEFORE I pull them out.... if they know
of a source. So far
all the no name, CTC, Beckson, etc that I have
measured or tried are all to
large.

I know the small bungee is for the water rudder (came preinstalled as
well)...I throw those away immediately and install a tension spring. Anyone
that is interested I can supply the CTC part # and how many coils I cut off
to make it work right. Guess I should add that to the "snag" list. Those
water rudder bungees don't make half a season before rotting off.

What came with these and Dennis's prebuilts was 11' of 1/2" bungee cord just
like you get for the main gear on the Rebel. Guess someone read cord and
threw in bungee instead of some small (rope) cord. I grabbed some mower
starter cord today that should do the trick. If you can get the make of the
pump I'll save myself some immediate work and give these cups a whirl for
this season.

I think the diameter and thickness of my blue ones are the same
as the new yellow ones, but can't be sure. I think I have 6 per
slide. It's pretty greasy in there right now, so kind of hard to
get accurate measurements. But almost 300 hours on these ones,
over about 3 years or so, and still working good.

Wayne,

I bought a suction pump out of a Harbor Freight catalog that fits the cup
perfectly. It's smaller than the standard seaplane pump but I never really had
to pump much more than a few times.
